NBL25 Grand Final "MVP" William 'Davo' Hickey has signed with the Sydney Comets — the club he played for as a junior — for the NBL1 2025 season.

"I’m really excited to be back playing at my junior club," Hickey said.

"It’s been a long time and just excited to be around the boys. I’m a competitor and just want to win."

Hickey, 26, led the Illawarra Hawks to the NBL25 Championship and was the presumptive MVP before the judges awarded it to Melbourne United's Matthew Dellavedova after the Hawks beat United in Game 5 at Illawarra.

Before he heads to the US for the NBA Summer League later this year he'll suit up alongside childhood Biwali Bayles for the 5-3 Comets.

Sydney Comets CEO and former Sydney Kings captain Ben Madgen told basketball.com.au: We are ecstatic to welcome Davo Hickey back to the Sydney Comets family.

"As a proud Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi man who began his basketball journey with our club, Davo embodies the spirit and work ethic we aim to instil in our players.

"His return is not just a boost for our NBL1 Men's team but an inspiration and positive role model for our community.

"Davo's journey from a Comets junior to an NBL champion with the Illawarra Hawks, showcases the heights our players can achieve. His leadership, both on and off the court, will undoubtedly motivate the next generation to pursue their dreams.

"Davo's return to the Comets also aligns with our commitment to securing homegrown talent in our NBL1 program and promoting positive role models within the community.

"His achievements, including being named to the NBL1 East All-Star Five and earning Defensive Player of the Year honours in 2024, highlight his exceptional play at both ends of the floor.

"His presence is poised to make a significant impact for the rest of the NBL1 East season."

Hickey was the NBL1 Defensive Player of the Year in 2024 and an member of the All-Star 5.

Under head coach Justin Tatum, his role expanded dramatically in the back half of Illawarra's NBL25 season. Given an opportunity to play more minutes, he thrived — producing when it counted, particularly in the playoffs, as Illawarra pushed toward a championship berth.
