Melbourne freshman Joel Foxwell is emerging as Portland’s star guard, drawing early NBA scouts

Squint just enough and Melbourne freshman guard Joel Foxwell's highlight reel handles resemble another Melbourne-born star – Kyrie Irving.

Foxwell, the younger brother of Australian Boomers guard Owen, has exploded on to the NCAA Men's Division 1 basketball scene this season, leading the Portland Pilots to a 4-2 record and first in the WCC conference. He's averaging 15.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.7 steals in 32.3 minutes.

He was named WCC freshman of the week and is already getting attention from scouts. He's already showing an elite ability to split gaps in PnRs, finish with both hands, hit big shots and nail on-the-money lob passes off the dribble. It's unusual for a true freshman to come straight into a D1 team and run the point with such maturity and effectiveness.

"Portland's got a star freshman in Joel Foxwell," PDTScouting's Arman Jovic wrote on X.

"The 6'1 freshman from Melbourne Australia has been on a offensive terror to begin the season averaging 17.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 4.8 APG

"Plays with pace and poise at an another level compared to most freshman that Portland's had in years past, really early but looks like an all conference guard

"Very impressed with how he's been controlling the game."

Irving has flirted with the idea of playing for the Boomers at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles but the potential has stalled after he blew out his ACL last season. He's out of the Dallas Mavericks rotation until at last March next year.

The Mavericks are in deep trouble, starting the season 5-13 are without All-NBA star Anthony Davis, who is in trade speculation with Josh Giddey's Chicago Bulls, Australian Boomers wing Dante Exum ruled out for the whole 2025-26 season with complications after off-season knee surgery and No1 Draft pick Cooper Flagg still finding his way.
