Australia's dream run to the FIBA Women's 3x3 World Cup title ended in heartbreaking fashion when the United States snatched a 21-20 victory on a buzzer-beating two-pointer in the gold medal game in Warsaw early on Monday morning (AEST).

The Gangurrus fought back from an early seven-point deficit and appeared set to complete a remarkable comeback when Marena Whittle drained a two-pointer to give Australia a 20-19 lead in the dying seconds.

But after Milaysia Fulwiley missed a potential winner, the United States secured an offensive rebound before Mikaylah Williams knocked down a two-point buzzer-beater to clinch gold.

Whittle produced one of the performances of the tournament, finishing with a game-high 11 points and five rebounds while shooting 4-from-8 from beyond the arc.

Australia trailed 11-5 midway through the contest before Whittle sparked the comeback.

She scored 12 of Australia's final 15 points, including three consecutive two-pointers that erased a 17-12 deficit and levelled the score at 17-17.

After Fulwiley gave the United States a 19-17 advantage with a two-pointer, Hannah Hank split a pair of free throws before Whittle delivered what looked to be the championship-winning basket.

Instead, Williams had the final say.
