Australian Opals guard Steph Reid didn't need to say "there's no 'I' in team"; the Tasmania Jewels point guard only needed to look up at the scoreboard at the final buzzer after the expansion club ended Sydney's unbeaten run 93-85 to start WNBL27 in Launceston in Round 3 on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
"As you can see by my golden locks, I'm absolutely loving it," Reid said.
"But honestly, it's just to see the spread of points. We've got people coming in, with our DPs coming off the bench and making such a huge impact. That's what we want to stand for.
"To see that come away with a win and show that value, it means the world.
"I'm super proud. I think everyone played such an incredible role and I'm really happy for us."
Reid had 17; American import Gianna Kneepkens 15; Brooke Basham and Darcee Garbin 13 each; and Ella Tofaeono 12.
"That was a tough game," Reid added.
"We knew they're such a great transition team. They're such an incredible team. That's the reason they're 4-0.
"We knew it was going to take 40 minutes and, obviously, we're all drenched in sweat. It feels really good, but it's just the beginning for us."
The Jewels are 2-1 while the Flames went to 4-1.
Australian Opals guard Ally Wilson was on a minutes restriction and played nine minutes off the bench while in-form point guard Jaz Shelley fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Wilson came off the bench, scored three points and grabbed four boards. Shelley went just 1-for-8 from the field, finished with four points, six assists and four rebounds.
"They had nine points off our turnovers today," Flames head coach Renae Garlepp said.
"They did a really good job with their pressure, especially that second quarter. We turned the ball over a bit, and they capitalised on it straight away, whether it was turnovers or early shots.
"It is frustrating, but it's definitely fixable.
"(Ally)'s on a minutes restriction coming back from injury. The plan was a little bit longer, but I haven't had time to chat to our physio.
(Jaz) will be disappointed in that. I think the group collectively will be disappointed in a few parts of the game, but that's the way it goes.
"There's still lots of games to go, and we get to go away, reassess what happened and how we can fix it.
"I just don't think it was our best night collectively. I don't think we moved the ball. I think it got really sticky."
