Duop Reath a free agent no longer, bakes new deal

Duop Reath has signed a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns, becoming the 11th Australian locked into a multi-million dollar deal for the 2026-27 NBA season.

The Australian Boomers centre signed for a veteran minimum.

Phoenix signed the 30-year-old to fill the void – and depth – left by Mark Williams, who is out for months following shoulder surgery. It left Phoenix with second-year big Khaman Maluach and not much behind him. Reath is the stretch five they needed.

In his final season at Portland, Reath shot 41.8 per cent from three in 32 games, at 8.1 minutes a night, averaging 2.9 points as the third option in the frontcourt. Across three NBA seasons he has made 145 of 406 (35.7%) attempts from distance.

Reath was traded to the Atlanta Hawks on February 1, 2026, with two future second-round picks, for guard Vit Krejci, joining Boomers teammate Dyson Daniels. Atlanta then let him go before he played a game.

He had foot surgery in late January, which ended his season.

In December he did not leave the bench in a Portland win over Golden State, a DNP coach's decision, in a season where his minutes swung between nothing and 30. The year before he had played 46 games and made 34 threes from 106 attempts.

Reath was born in Waat, South Sudan, on June 26, 1996, and his family moved to Australia when he was a child. He played college basketball at LSU, then professionally in Lebanon, then in the NBL. He went undrafted in 2018 and did not sign an NBA contract until 2023.

In between he won bronze with the Boomers in Tokyo.

His career earnings are US$6,221,677 across three seasons and two teams, and his last Portland deal was worth US$2.2 million fully guaranteed.
