Megan McConnell reveals Sami Whitcomb’s pivotal role in her move to defending WNBL champions Bendigo

American point guard Megan McConnell has revealed it was reigning WNBL MVP Sami Whitcomb that was the catalyst to her signing with the defending champions Bendigo Spirit this season.

"It was so crazy," McConnell, 24, said to Bec Cole on the latest episode of It's a Cole World.

"I was with Phoenix for that short stint of time, and when they re-signed me I fractured my knee.

"I remember we were about to play Dallas and I was sitting in the pre-game room. Sami Whitcomb had just finished her workout, and she sits down and says, 'I talked to Kennedy.'

"At first I thought, 'Wait, what?'

"She said the Bendigo Spirit, the team she played for in Australia, wanted me and that I would be perfect for their team.

"That had not crossed my mind. She said I would love it and that they really wanted me.

"She said she would connect my agent with them and put me on a phone call. I did not know much about the WNBL, and Australia was the last place I thought I would end up because it is the farthest place in the world for me.

"I got in touch with them, got on a Zoom call, and they really sold me.

"I trusted Sami because she took me under her wing in Phoenix. It is the best decision I have ever made.

"I could thank Sami 10,000 times and it still would not be enough. I am grateful that I came here."

Whitcomb, 37, signed with the Mercury for the 2025 WNBA season but didn't return to the WNBL, in favour of playing in Europe.
