Geelong’s WNBL team rebrands as the Venom, marking a new era for basketball in Geelong.

  • During their NBL era, Geelong was known as the Supercats
  • The name returned for their NBL1 era until recently when Geelong and Corio merged
  • The naming decision came down to two, Venom and Force

A new identity has been unveiled for Geelong’s WNBL team, with the club officially rebranding as the Geelong Venom in alignment with the league’s refreshed direction.

The name was selected following an extensive eight-week process that involved input from players, staff, fans and partners.

Beginning with a blank slate, the project generated more than 100 potential names before being narrowed down to two finalists, Geelong Force and Geelong Venom.

Public feedback was sought before a final decision was made.

The name Venom was ultimately chosen for its energy, edge and representation of strength, precision and identity. Inspired by Australia’s most dangerous snakes, the branding reflects a team designed to strike: with instinct, control and confidence.

Key voices in the process included WNBL athletes Jazz Shelley and Gemma Potter, who helped ensure the player experience remained central to the brand’s development.

“This is a really exciting time for both us and the WNBL,” said Geelong United CEO Mark Neeld.

“When creating our new identity, we wanted to make sure we chose something that fans could really get behind as a strong representation of our region.

"The Geelong Venom rebrand not only matches the new direction of the league itself, but will be a driving force in the future of women’s basketball for our city.”

The club will debut their new identity in the upcoming WNBL season, representing the next chapter in the city's growing presence in elite women’s basketball.
