Chantel Horvat could be one of the most impactful under-the-radar signings in the WNBL.
The talented forward, who last year played for the UC Capitals, joins the championship-favourite Townsville Fire late in the offseason as an injury replacement for youngster Saffron Shiels and the signing has already paid off for Shannon Seebohm.
Horvat had 20 points and nine rebounds in a dominant Fire win over her former team in round two and off the back of the impressive performance she joined two-time WNBL champion Bec Cole on the second episode of season two of 'It's a Cole World'.
Basketball has taken the 27-year-old all over the globe, having represented Australia throughout her junior career, attending the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence before a successful college basketball career at the iconic UCLA.
After graduating in 2022, Horvat was part of the training camp squad with the Los Angeles Sparks before playing in Europe and then joining the Capitals for the 2024-25 WNBL season.
Having joined Townsville, who sit atop our basketball.com.au power rankings, Horvat is enjoying her time in north Queensland, especially following her 8-from-11 performance against the Capitals, which drew praise from her coach after the game.
"She’s awesome," he said.
"Really impressed. You saw it today — she came off the bench and made an instant impact.
"It wasn’t just scoring; it was hustle plays, rebounds, offensive boards, her ability to switch and defend multiple positions.
"She’s been fantastic and she’s a phenomenal person. I coached her once before, briefly, so it’s been cool getting to know her more now.
"She loves basketball and I think she’s really enjoying being in Townsville, which is awesome."
The Townsville Fire are on the road again in round three, taking on the Southside Melbourne Flyers on October 31 before the Perth Lynx on November 4.
