Aussie basketball star Georgia Amoore, injured in training camp, in her most candid interview yet

  • Georgia Amoore was selected sixth overall by the Washington Mystics in the WNBA Draft
  • She will miss the 2025 season with the ACL injury she suffered in training
  • Amoore was a WNBL teammate of Bec Cole's at the Dandenong Rangers

Former US women's college basketball star and 2025 No.6 draft pick Georgia Amoore revealed she feared her WNBA career may have been over before it even started, in an extraordinarily candid, exclusive interview with basketball.com.au's Bec Cole.

It is the first time Amoore, 24, has talked about the training camp moment that ended her 2025 season.

"I was just laying there, and everything just flashed before my eyes," she told Cole on It's a Cole World.

"Because I was like, I'm a rookie, I haven't proved anything and it's a business."

"You just hear those stories about, especially overseas if you're injured, you're done. So, I was just in a bit of shock. I didn't know."

"(But) I started to get more feedback and more communication from the people that matter within the organisation and the general feedback was I'm here, I can rehab, and I can do whatever I need and that was blessing enough.

"Obviously, I was upset but I was just like what's next?

"My mind instantly went to I need to get better."

The former Kentucky Wildcats point guard, who was drafted by the Washington Mystics to play alongside fellow Aussie Jade Melbourne, suffered an ACL injury during training camp.

In the interview with Cole, her former WNBL teammate when she was a development player at the Dandenong Rangers, Amoore also talks about choosing college over playing in Australia, her college experience, collaborating with NBA star and fashion icon Russell Westbrook on Draft Day and, of course, her injury.

The Ballarat-born point guard also spoke about the draft process, including thinking she was going to expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries at one stage.

"I walked away from the Washington call being like yeah, 'I hope they pick me'," she said.

"I was like if the Washington Mystics are going to select me, it'll be at six. So, when like they were slowly rolling through it and Sony went first and Sony's table was next to me, I was like okay, yeah, I knew that. Kiki happened and then Golden State had that fifth pick.

"They weren't a team that I talked to, but the cameras started coming to my table and I was like, and then the pick went in, and it wasn't me and the cameras are still at my table. I'm like 'oh, this has to be me'.

"So, I think when I got picked, I didn't really have like shock because I kind of had that fifth pick to like sit through it and come to terms with what might happen.

"So you know, but you don't. The cameras are a dead giveaway because they just come rushing to you.

"But for a split second I thought I was going to Golden State, which was crazy because I didn't even talk to them."
