Current Australian Boomers head coach Adam Caporn has labelled Brian Goorjian "one of the greatest of all time in the world" after the man who led the national team to a historic Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo claimed his seventh NBL Coach of the Year award.
Caporn, who is an assistant coach in the NBA for the Washington Wizards, made the comments while doing an interview with famous Australian NBA fanatic and former co-host of The Starters in Leigh Ellis.
The 43-year-old former assistant of Goorjian's with the Boomers at the 2020 Tokyo Games and 2024 Olympics in Paris, said he was "so thankful" of how Goorjian mentored him.
"Incredible coach, one of the greatest of all time in the world in my opinion," Caporn told Ellis.
"(I) just feel very privileged to be mentored by him, coach with him, and the trust he put in me and the responsibility he gave me, I'm so thankful.
"One of his great gifts I believe was his ability to get the team to play very hard and be committed to a common goal, but at the same time the environment, it wasn't anxious, it was, you know, he was funny and authentic and has a great sense of humility."
While Caporn said he'll be his own type of coach with the Boomers, which we've already seen after he led the team to FIBA Asia Cup gold last year, he admits he has taken a lot from the coach, otherwise known as The GOAT of coaching in the NBL.
"I'm going to be myself, but I just recognise that his gifts, they were really special and you can't always be on, you know, we are getting ready to play for some really big moments and we're going to play really hard and play together, but at the same time we're going to have a great experience and pour into each other."
Caporn and the Wizards are in a rebuild phase in the NBA, sitting 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 16-42 record but have shown some positive signs with a young core, featuring former NBL Next Star Alex Sarr, and have also recently traded for 10-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis and star point guard Trae Young.
Goorjian led the Sydney Kings to the NBL's minor premiership this season with his team the favourites to take out the title.
