With the first pay cheque of a new $A140 million contract set to land in his bank account on November 15, Dyson Daniels is among Australia’s richest sportspeople.
But, for the Boomers and NBA star, family comes above all else, writes Michael Randall from Code Sports.
Mum Brikitta and dad Ricky have been a constant rock throughout the elite sporting journeys of the tough Atlanta Hawks’ guard and brothers Kai, a Richmond VFL key position player, and Dash, an NBL Next Star at South East Melbourne, who is aiming to follow in Dyson’s footsteps to the NBA draft.
Dyson’s made sure they’ve been well looked after, not just financially, but by ensuring his parents remain a part of his unique path, which has taken him to the Olympics, a World Cup and a Most Improved Player gong in the world’s best basketball league — all by age 23.
“I look after my family like they looked after me growing up,” Daniels told Code Sports.
“Yeah, I have got them a house and cars and stuff like that, but that’s not the main thing. It’s about knowing that they’re safe, knowing that they’re happy.
“I think the biggest thing, in my position, is about trying to involve them in things, keep them around and have them help whenever they can.
“That’s what my parents want, to be around their kids as they grow up … and (I want them to) go on the journey with me.”
So what’s it like to sign a guaranteed $US100 million contract that will pay the Bendigo boy an average of $US25 million per season over the next four years?
“It’s pretty crazy, to be honest. It’s special. It’s something that you couldn’t really dream of but everyone wants,” Daniels said.
