Two trades in seven weeks, and now the Boomers bronze medallist wants to mentor Utah's young core.

  • Charlotte traded Green to Minnesota in July, then Minnesota sent him to Utah
  • He is the fourth Australian to play for the Jazz, after Ingles, Exum and Mills
  • Green wants to help No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson and Ace Bailey develop

Australian Boomers bronze medallist Josh Green’s road to Salt Lake City took a detour via Minnesota after the Charlotte Hornets traded him and former NBL Next Star LaMelo Ball in early July.

By the end of August, the 25-year-old 3&D wing was with the Utah Jazz, preparing for his seventh NBA season as the fourth Australian to suit up for the Western Conference franchise.

Green wants to use that experience to help the Jazz develop its young roster, including No. 2 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft Darryn Peterson and 2025 No. 5 pick Ace Bailey.

“I’m a quieter guy, but I do think I demonstrate a lot through what I do on the court and how I act on the court,” Green said during his media day interview.

“Hopefully, I’m someone who’s good to talk to and learn lessons from. Throughout my career, I’ve been through a lot of different situations, and they’ve definitely helped me grow, especially over the last few years. I hope I can be somebody to lean on.

“As far as me, I love winning. I love having a winning mentality. For me, it’s just: what can I do to help the team win and go forward? Make the little plays on the floor that matter.“

“Overall, it goes back to working as hard as I can and trying to help those young guys out as much as I can.

“It’s the commitment. Seeing the amount of guys who have been here throughout the summer, being able to play and build chemistry together already – I think that’s the biggest piece.

“All the guys are committed and have the same goal in mind.

“In saying that, we understand it’s a long season. The guys haven’t played together, so it’s about building a new identity, building good chemistry and moving forward like that.”

Utah acquired Green and cash from Minnesota on August 29 for John Konchar and Cody Williams.

Utah’s big moves in the off-season

  • Walker Kessler out: traded to the Lakers on July 8 for draft considerations only. Their starting centre went for no player in return.
  • Keyonte George locked in: rookie-scale extension on September 18. He's the one long-term piece they've committed to.
  • Centre rebuilt on short money: Jusuf Nurkic re-signed (July 9), and Jaxson Hayes and Mo Bamba signed (July 10).

Depth and churn:

  • Josh Okogie signed (July 10).
  • Two-way deals for Tamar Bates (July 3) and Trey Alexander (July 7).
  • Waived Matthew Murrell (September 2), and Ibrahima Diallo and Justin Harmon (September 24).
  • Konchar and Cody Williams went out in the Green deal.

“My first impression is just that it’s a great organisation,” Green said.

“It’s super well run. They’ve created a great competitive environment. They’ve brought in great guys, a great young core.

“I haven’t spent too much time here in Utah, but there have been plenty of other Australians come through Utah.”

Green’s Australian Boomers Olympic Games teammates Joe Ingles, Dante Exum and Patty Mills have all played for the Jazz.

The Sydney-born 1.98m guard said he hadn’t spent time in Utah outside of road trips to play the Jazz, but he’d been settling in.

“I’ve been familiar with watching the team play throughout those years, as well as coming here and playing the Jazz during the playoffs and whatnot.

“I’m not too familiar yet, but I’m definitely making my way around and trying new stuff out. I’ve been here for a couple of weeks. I enjoy my coffee, so I’ve been to a few spots out here.

“So far, it’s been great.”

The Utah Jazz play their first game of the NBA pre-season on Monday, October 5, 2026, against the Denver Nuggets at 10am (AEDT) and then open their season against the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday, October 22, at 11am.
