The Splash: NBL's behind-the-scenes blockbuster

The Splash is basketball.com.au's rumour column.

Cutthroat decisions, a legend with WNBL interest and more in this week's Splash

  • Is an NBL team on the verge of making a season-changing move?
  • An NBL legend looking to get into the WNBL ownership race
  • An unprecedented amount of roster movement for NBL1

Australian basketball never sleeps. Rumours spread like wildfire and our community is always ripe for gossip.

basketball.com.au has sources everywhere, so we hear about signings, controversy, hard-hitting news.

We are here for it — the good, the fun, the funny and the bad.

Here are some of the things we're hearing.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE?

A recruit one team on the east coast of Australia thought may be someone that could be an X-factor for them in NBL26 could be on the edge of an unceremonius departure from the club.

Basketball.com.au is hearing this player, who has represented their country in the past, is on the nose with the club and the coaching staff and an exit could happen in the very near future.

The whispers are out there this club's coaching staff and management believe the performances of this player, who has been battling some injury troubles, haven't been up to scratch and they are currently negotiating to try and make an urgent change.

Which player and club is it? That is the golden question isn't it...

NBL TEAMS LOOKING TO ADD CHINESE STAR

After being waived by the Brooklyn Nets on the eve of the NBA season, it has been well reported that Chinese forward Fanbo Zeng has recently been in Melbourne training with former NBL player and former assistant coach Luke Kendall.

The former G League Ignite and Beijing Ducks player, of course, has interest from teams around the NBL. That's not the rumour, that is common knowledge, and with the Special Restricted Player rule in the NBL - why wouldn't they be? We've seen Asian talents as recent as Hyunjung Lee have a significant impact in the NBL, playing a major role in Illawarra's run to the NBL25 title.

But which team is trying to make some moves behind the scenes to acquire Zeng?

Basketball.com.au is hearing there's one team in particular, that has more interest than others in the 6'9" small forward/power forward.

We'll let our readers try and figure that our BUT we may have already given a clue.

GLITTER STIP WNBL EXPANSION

Basketball.com.au has been all over the bid groups interested in acquiring the WNBL's 10th license in southeast Queensland.

We know the bid from the Brisbane Bullets is probably the frontrunner, there's another bid which is led by a former WNBL administrator and a former WNBL head coach which could be a smokey to enter the league.

But we're hearing there's a third group which has put their hat in the ring.

And we're hearing the group is led by former Australian NBA player, NBL legend and two-time NBL MVP Chris Anstey who wants to start the team on the glitter strip that is the Gold Coast.

Not sure if that's the right move considering the lack of success of sporting teams in SEQ that are outside Brisbane but it's great for the league to have that interest.

ADAMS' DEPARTURE WAS DESTINED TO HAPPEN

Former NBL MVP and NBL champion Jaylen Adams' never seemed like the right fit for the Brisbane Bullets.

It was no surprise there were issues and similar to issues which caused problems during his NBL25 campaign with the Sydney Kings. We're hearing those issues started all the way back in preseason.

That aside, on top of it, it's believed several senior players weren't happy with Adams' commitment to the group.

Regardless of the details of the issues, subtracting Adams from the Bullets squad was the right move my management, but was it done too late?

TEAMMATE CLASH OVERBLOWN

There were some public commentary on a clash between Illawarra Hawks stars and teammates Davo Hickey and former NBA star JaVale McGee. We're hearing it was nothing but a small disagreement about something during a game and nothing more.

The duo are fine and look to be prepared to try and lead the Hawks to the top six in the second half of the season.

NBL1 RECRUITMENT ROLLERCOASTER

Gear up for an exciting NBL and WNBL offseason because we're hearing there's going to be an unprecedented amount of movement across the NBL1.

And that's both in women's and men's competitions and across all conferences.

There'll be a crazy amount of movement featuring some of the country's best talents!
