This week in kicks: For Curry, it's definitely the shoes
Steph Curry, Donovan Mitchell and Aaron Gordon all unveil new sneakers in NBA playoffs
- Steph Curry drops Series 7by Curry Brand
- Jayson Tatum trolls Paolo Banchero with Jordan flex
- Patty Mills delivers the fit of the week
They say that the only constant is change, and that has never been more true than with basketball shoes, drawing inspiration from all across the world.
From skate shoes to tennis shoes, basketball footwear has continued to weave in elements from across the design world, but now they have found a new muse - performance running shoes.
As the playoffs continue and brands release their newest models, the range of different designs are clearer than ever before.
Curry brand channels marathon shoes
Steph Curry and his Under Armour affiliated brand dropped have his latest sneaker, the Series 7 by Curry Brand.
The eye-catching shoe is a low-top, as most of Curry’s latest models have been, but the stand-out feature is the exaggerated midsole and heel stack.
The model draws inspiration from performance running shoes, with the silhouette reminiscent of shoes like the Nike Alphafly line and the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4.
It was an impressive debut for the new model, Curry finishing with 36 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in a huge Game 3 win.
Gordon downs Clippers in new signature
The hope of any shoe designer is that they can craft an iconic model, one associated with greatness.
That’s exactly what happened with Aaron Gordon’s latest model, the 361 AG ZEN 7.
Gordon laced up the shoe for the first time in Denver’s Game 4 win over the Los Angeles Clippers - finishing with 14 points and six rebounds as the Nuggets tied up the series.
But it was the final two points that provided the Denver big with his iconic moment, a buzzer-beating put-back dunk to win the game.
NBL1 SNEAKER OF THE WEEK
Mitchell debuts new model in second round
After a dominant first round win against the Miami Heat, the Cleveland Cavaliers face off against the Indiana Pacers in round two, and Donovan Mitchell pulled out some new shoes for the occasion.
The Cavaliers All-Star debuted his seventh signature model, the Adidas D.O.N. Issue 7, in the opening game of the series.
Following a similar design to the previous model, this new shoe features a sleeker upper, sporting a fluoro gradient.
While the Cavaliers lost the opener, Mitchell used his new shoes to score 31 points, his eighth-straight Game 1 with 30 or more points, which is an NBA record.
Tatum trolls Paolo with Jordan flex
Jayson Tatum and Paolo Banchero faced off in round one of the playoffs, two of Jordan Brand’s key athletes.
While the Magic star normally wears Tatum’s third signature shoe, he instead opted for the Jordan 39 during the series, saying he would not wear a player’s sneaker against him.
Tatum apparently caught wind of this, and pulled up to Game 3 wearing Banchero’s PE of the Tatum 3, a not-so-subtle dig at the former number one pick.
Ultimately, the Magic were unable to put up much of a fight against Boston, losing the series in five games.
FIT OF THE WEEK: Patty Mills
Every week, we’ll pick one Aussie or Aussie-adjacent hooper who has put together the fit of the week.
While the Clippers playoff journey may have ended in the first round, Patty Mills used the seven game series to get off some serious fits, none better than this clean jacket, jeans, and timberlands look.
