Hill anchors championship win for Victoria Country

Victoria Country claimed its first Foot Locker Under-16 Girls National Championship in 35 years, defeating Victoria Metro 60-52 in Sunday's gold medal game in Bendigo.

After last winning the title in 1990, Victoria Country controlled the contest for most of the morning, leading by as many as 12 points before withstanding a late Victoria Metro fightback to secure the Norma Connolly Trophy.

Molly Beasley, Mia Cox and Mila Childs powered the offence while captain Jada Hill anchored a relentless defensive effort as Victoria Country forced 24 turnovers to complete the upset.

Victoria Country made the perfect start, racing to a 21-14 lead after one quarter before extending the margin to 34-24 at halftime. Metro trimmed the deficit to seven entering the final period, but Country repeatedly answered every challenge to close out the eight-point victory.

Beasley was outstanding with 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists, adding a block in a complete all-round performance.

Childs added 14 points and four rebounds, while Cox finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, converting all six of her free throw attempts.

Hill's influence extended well beyond her nine points, finishing with nine rebounds, three assists, five steals and a block in a captain's performance across the full 40 minutes.

Kaylee Mann provided an important spark from the bench with seven points.

Victoria Country's defence proved decisive. The champions collected 14 steals and forced Metro into 24 turnovers, converting those mistakes into 17 points. They also dominated in transition, outscoring Metro 12-0 on the fast break.

Victoria Metro struggled to find offensive rhythm despite winning the rebounding battle 56-38.

Captain Ilana Tamburrini was superb in defeat, recording a double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds while shooting seven-from-13 from the field.

Meia Gayfer added nine points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Ziva Whiston scored seven points off the bench and Steele Brown contributed six.

Neither team shot well from the field in a physical championship contest. Victoria Country finished 20-from-62 (32%) and Metro 19-from-66 (29%), but Country's efficiency at the free throw line proved another key difference, converting 17-of-22 compared with Metro's 10-of-17.

The championship is Victoria Country's fourth Under-16 girls national title and first since its triumph in Mackay in 1990, ending a 35-year drought against a Victoria Metro program that entered the final as the defending champion.
