Smith leads MVP race into blockbuster NBL1 Central finals
Jeremy Smith, Kelly Clark headline MVP race as NBL1 Central finals arrive
- Forestville and West Adelaide claim minor premierships after dominant regular seasons.
- Jeremy Smith and Kelly Clark emerge as Unleashed MVP winners after outstanding campaigns.
- Four blockbuster finals this weekend will decide who challenges the league's top seeds.
The NBL1 Central regular season has delivered dominant minor premiers, thrilling MVP races and four intriguing first-week finals after 15 rounds of basketball that produced few certainties beyond the brilliance of West Adelaide's women and Forestville's men.
Now the real season begins.
Forestville and West Adelaide finish on top
The Forestville Eagles (16-2) secured the men's minor premiership after another outstanding campaign, earning the first-week bye and home-court advantage throughout the finals.
Sturt (15-3) claimed second and the remaining double chance, while South Adelaide (13-5) enters the playoffs in third despite a brief late-season stumble.
Woodville (10-8) held off Central Districts (10-8) on percentage to secure fourth spot and home-court advantage in Friday night's elimination final.
In the women's competition, West Adelaide completed one of the most dominant seasons in recent NBL1 Central history, finishing 17-1 and six games clear of the field.
Sturt (14-4) locked away second, Norwood (12-6) surged into third after a strong second half of the season, South Adelaide (11-7) finished fourth and Forestville (10-8) grabbed the final playoff berth after surviving an injury-hit campaign.
Smith's MVP season
Few players have controlled games this season like South Adelaide import Jeremy Smith.
The Panthers guard finished the regular season leading the competition with 25.9 points per game, while also averaging 6.8 assists, 5.9 rebounds and shooting an outstanding 59 per cent from the field.
His ability to score efficiently while creating opportunities for teammates has made him the clear favourite in many MVP conversations.
The NBL1 Central Unleashed podcast named Smith its Men's MVP after another dominant campaign, with the veteran guard saying his greatest satisfaction comes from setting up teammates rather than filling the scoreboard.
If South Adelaide is to challenge Forestville and Sturt for the championship, Smith will almost certainly be at the centre of it.
Women's race goes to the wire
The women's MVP discussion proved far more difficult.
Sturt star Tayla Brazel again demonstrated why she is regarded as one of the league's premier all-round players, averaging 16.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists while carrying the Sabres to second place.
Morgan Yaeger finished as the highest-scoring full-season player at 20.2 points per game, while Norwood import Kelly Clark transformed the Flames after a slow start to the season.
Clark's impact went well beyond scoring.
She controlled the paint, dominated the glass, defended multiple positions and helped Norwood win seven of its final eight games to finish third.
That late-season surge saw Clark share the NBL1 Central Unleashed Women's MVP with Brazel after voting came down to the final round of the season.
Award contenders
Several players enter Sunday's official NBL1 Central awards as leading contenders.
Men's
- MVP: Jeremy Smith (South Adelaide)
- Defensive Player of the Year: Lloyd McVeigh (South Adelaide)
- All-Star Five locks: Jeremy Smith, Jacob Rigoni, Greg Mays and Lloyd McVeigh, with Koen Sapwell among the strongest contenders for the final position.
Women's
- MVP: Tayla Brazel (Sturt)
- Defensive Player of the Year: Chloe Hodges (West Adelaide)
- All-Star Five locks: Morgan Yaeger, Tayla Brazel, Kelly Clark and Chloe Hodges, with Alexandra Ciabattoni also firmly in the conversation.
Four fascinating finals
The opening weekend shapes as one of the most competitive in recent seasons.
Men's Elimination Final
Woodville Warriors (4) vs Central Districts Lions (5)
Perhaps the hardest game of the weekend to predict.
Woodville scraped past Southern by two points to secure home-court advantage, while Central Districts produced one of the performances of the season, smashing Norwood behind Koen Sapwell's 43-point masterpiece.
Momentum appears to sit with the Lions, but home court gives Woodville every chance.
Men's Qualifying Final
Sturt Sabres (2) vs South Adelaide Panthers (3)
The headline act.
Jeremy Smith, Lloyd McVeigh and the Panthers take on Jacob Rigoni and the Sabres in what promises to be a physical, high-quality contest between genuine championship contenders.
The winner earns a direct path to the preliminary final and a crack at Forestville.
Women's Elimination Final
South Adelaide Panthers (4) vs Forestville Eagles (5)
Forestville enters battle-tested after overcoming injuries and a shortened rotation throughout the second half of the season.
South Adelaide has won four of its past five and will back its depth, while the Eagles will again lean heavily on Sydney Hunter, Booth and Samantha Simons.
Women's Qualifying Final
Sturt Sabres (2) vs Norwood Flames (3)
Arguably the most intriguing matchup of the weekend.
Norwood has beaten Sturt twice this season, but the Sabres pushed powerhouse West Adelaide for three quarters in the final round and believe they have found the blueprint to challenge for the championship if they can dictate tempo.
Kelly Clark versus Tayla Brazel shapes as one of the defining individual battles of the finals.
The championship picture
Forestville's men and West Adelaide's women deserve favouritism after outstanding regular seasons, but history suggests little once the playoffs begin.
South Adelaide's explosive offence, Sturt's defensive discipline, Central Districts' recent form and Norwood's late-season momentum all provide genuine reasons to believe the minor premiers can be challenged.
After 15 rounds, the ladder has done its job.
Now, every possession matters.
