The unbeaten Cairns Dolphins survived a major 2026 NBL1 North Women’s test behind dominant performances from Mia Loyd and Summah Evans, edging the Mackay Meteorettes 84-81 in Round 6.
What the Round Told Us
Cairns continues to prove it can win in multiple ways. After controlling games comfortably through the opening rounds, the Dolphins were forced into a four-quarter battle against one of the league’s best offensive teams and still found answers late. Southern Districts also strengthened its championship credentials with another defensive road win, while North Gold Coast’s perfect weekend tightened the middle of the ladder entering Round 7.

Cairns Dolphins protected their unbeaten start behind a huge inside-outside combination from Mia Loyd and Summah Evans.
Loyd finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while Evans erupted for 26 points on 10-from-14 shooting and knocked down six threes at 66.7%.
The Dolphins controlled the first half behind their perimeter shot-making before Mackay closed late behind Monique Bobongie and Sammie Puisis. Cairns held on through the final minutes to improve to 6-0 and maintain top spot on the ladder.
Brooke Basham flirted with a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for Cairns, which finished with 21 assists and won the rebounding battle 49-40.
Mackay received 27 points from Bobongie and 23 points from Puisis, but the Meteorettes shot just 37.7% from the field overall.

Southern Districts Spartans continued to establish itself as Cairns’ biggest challenger with a defensive road win against the Northside Wizards.
The Spartans improved to 7-1 behind another balanced team performance led by Jessica McDowell-White, who produced 16 points, six assists and five steals while shooting 4-from-6 from three-point range.
Abby Solway added 16 points and four made threes, while Emily Preston controlled the glass with 11 rebounds.
Northside struggled offensively throughout the opening quarter, scoring just seven points, and never fully recovered despite 21 points and 11 rebounds from Nes'eya Parker-Williams.
Southern Districts forced inefficient offence all night, holding the Wizards to 37.5% shooting and just 2-from-15 from three-point range.
