How to be a better ball handler under pressure
Player Tutorials
Five things you need to do to be a better ball handler in competitive basketball
To level up your dribbling skills for U14 and above, blend fundamentals, intensity, and game-like situations.
Here's a structured approach that works well for young athletes aiming to play at a high level:
๐ CORE PRINCIPLES
- Consistency is King โ Dribble every day, even 10โ15 mins.
- Eyes Up Always โ Never look at the ball. Use mirrors, or call out numbers with a partner.
- Low & Wide Stance โ Keep your hips down and base wide for better balance and control.
- Use Both Hands โ Train your weak hand until thereโs no difference.
๐ ๏ธ DAILY DRIBBLING ROUTINE (15โ20 MINS)
Warm-Up (2 mins)
- Pound dribbles (each hand) โ 30 sec each
- Crossovers โ 30 sec
- Between legs โ 30 sec
- Behind back โ 30 sec
Stationary Ball Handling (5โ7 mins)
- Figure 8s
- V-dribble front and side (both hands)
- Double ball dribbles (if you have 2 balls โ excellent for coordination)
Movement Drills (5โ7 mins)
- Zig-zag dribbling with change of direction moves:
Work on combinations like:- Crossover โ attack
- Between legs โ spin
- Behind back โ stop on a dime
- Cone attack series:
Set up 3โ5 cones and change direction at each. Simulate defenders.
Game-Like Situations (5 mins)
- 1-on-1 full court or half-court โ play against someone who pushes you
- Pressure drills โ have a coach or teammate โbumpโ you as you dribble
๐ง IQ + REACTION
- Change speeds: Donโt always go full tilt. Slow โ explode.
- Learn to read the defenderโs feet and hips.
- Use your body โ protect the ball with your off-hand and shoulders.
๐ฎ BONUS DRILLS
- Tennis ball + basketball: Toss tennis ball in the air with one hand, dribble with the other. Catch and keep going โ great for hand-eye coordination.
- 2-ball rhythm changes: Both balls dribbling together โ alternate โ combo.
๐งฑ BUILDING BLOCKS TO ADD
- Finishing after the dribble โ layups, floaters, reverse, euro, etc.
- Dribble into shot โ pull-ups, step-backs, snatch-backs.
