Chicago Bulls and Australian Boomers star point guard Josh Giddey will spend his offseason recovering from surgery after he underwent a successful arthroscopy on his right ankle, the NBA team announced today.
Giddey had the surgery in his hometown of Melbourne with the Bulls saying he is scheduled to start basketball activities in approximately three months and is expected to return for the start of training camp in October.
The 23-year-old had a breakout season for the underwhelming Bulls, averaging 17 points, 9.1 assists and 8.3 rebounds, which were all career-highs for the former Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence scholarship holder.
However, Giddey was limited to just 54 games in the first year of his four-year, $100 million deal - his lowest since his rookie season with the Oklahoma City Thunder - due to hamstring and right ankle injuries.
The former NBL Next Star with the Adelaide 36ers posted a photo to Instagram of him enjoying a Grill'd burger while recovering in hospital from the surgery.
It's another moment in a turbulent offseason for the Bulls following the departure of popular head coach Billy Donovan, who the organisation wanted to return to the sidelines, and also following both Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Arturas Karnisovas and General Manager Marc Eversley being fired by owner Michael Reinsdorf.
Chicago hired Bryson Graham as Karnisovas' replacement earlier this month with the former Atlanta Hawks front office member leading the Bulls' search for a new coach.
While uncertainty has flooded the organisation in recent months, one thing is certain and that's the Bulls plan to build around Giddey as their franchise point guard following several trades this past season, including dealing Coby White to the Charlotte Hornets.
Chicago also received the fourth pick in the upcoming draft, which is believed to put them in the box seat to select Caleb Wilson from the University of North Carolina.
