Trimmed Delly's Sydney transformation
The Boomers legend talks his switch from United to Sydney ahead of first clash against his old team
- Matthew Dellavedova joined the Sydney Kings as a free agent after three seasons with Melbourne United
- Dellavedova has played at four Olympic Games, including the bronze medal effort in Tokyo
- He was part of the Cleveland Cavaliers' 2016 NBA championship
Tough as teak in mind and body, Matthew Dellavedova has reinvented himself several times throughout his remarkable career — so it’s not just the purple of his new Sydney Kings singlet that’s has him looking leaner and meaner, writes Michael Randall from CODE Sports.
The Sydney Kings recruit, who will face his former club Melbourne United for the first time in Wednesday night’s NBL Ignite Cup clash, continues to defy father time with yet another reinvention, geared at keeping him at the top of his game as he chases an elusive NBL title and a fifth Olympic Games in 2028.
“(I’m) a little bit leaner, yeah. I’ve been working hard this off-season, getting quicker and jumping higher,” Dellavedova said.
“Put in a good body of work with Paul McCoy, my college teammate (at St Mary’s) who I work out with each summer in California.
With a multitude of NBA-level guards vying for precious few Boomers spots, many will write Delly off – just as they did prior to Paris, particularly after he missed the cut for the prior World Cup.
But the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist believes he still has plenty to give to the national program and is firmly focused on a fifth games.
“That’s what I’ve always dreamt of as a kid and there’s nothing better than playing for the Boomers, that’s pure basketball, everyone just wants to win,” he said.
“To me, there’s nothing better than that and I still feel like I have some things that I want to do on the international stage and that I can do and I think we have a really exciting group coming through that I can add value to.”
