Tyrell Harrison ($336,100) leads the NBL27 Dunk-O-Meter with 11 dunks after 25 games, three of them in Brisbane's 97-91 loss to Cairns on Thursday, October 8. He is two clear of Josh Oduro ($277,000), with Zylan Cheatham ($339,500) third on seven. Jaylin Williams ($277,000), Sam Mennenga ($303,100) and Jacob Holt ($176,300) are level fourth on five, with Williams and Holt both dunking against the Taipans.

Six players sit on four: Carlin Davison ($121,600), Jordan Hunter ($224,800), Makur Maker ($99,800), Luke Travers ($292,900), Nick Rakocevic ($188,400) and David Johnson ($232,900), who joined them with a dunk in Tasmania's 122-112 win over Illawarra on Friday, October 9. Three of Davison's four were alley-oop finishes, still the most of any player.

The Brisbane Bullets lead the clubs with 23, one ahead of Melbourne United on 22 after the same five games. The New Zealand Breakers are third on 16, the Adelaide 36ers fourth on 13 and the Tasmania JackJumpers fifth on 12.

Parker Jackson-Cartwright ($405,200) has still thrown the most alley-oop finishes, five of the 15, three of them to Davison. Arnas Velicka ($277,000) is next on three after throwing two against Cairns, one each to Harrison and Williams.

Every figure is read from the NBL play-by-play for all 25 games in Rounds 1 to 4, not entered by hand. 15 of the 118 dunks were alley-oop finishes, which is what the second column counts - they are part of the dunk total, not an addition to it. An alley-oop that is not dunked is not counted at all. Counts are of made attempts. Rounds 1 to 4 also produced 10 missed dunks (Jonah Bolden, Malique Lewis, Nick Rakocevic, Nate Hinton, Tyrell Harrison, Sam Waardenburg, Tanner Krebs, Keanu Pinder, Sam Waardenburg, Tyrell Harrison), which are not counted here. A tip-in is not recorded as a dunk: the league feed does not say which tip-ins were dunked, and there is no dunk column anywhere in the official box scores, so the play-by-play is the only source.

A dunk is one player; an alley-oop is two. The passer is read from the assist the league records against each alley-oop dunk, so these pairings are the feed’s own, not ours. Alley-oops that were not dunked are not counted anywhere in this tracker.

Legendary Los Angeles Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn coined the phrase Slam Dunk, now one of the most common descriptions in world basketball.

Hearn, who died on August 5, 2002 aged 85, was at the microphone for 3,338 games, first as a radio broadcaster and then simulcast on both TV and the "wireless".

So, in honour of Chick, basketball.com.au is tracking every slam dunk of NBL27 by player and team until: "The game's in the refrigerator, the door's closed, the light's out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard and the jello's jiggling!"
