Australian men’s basketball is punching above its weight against global powerhouses.
No more evidence is needed than the NBL Next Stars 3-0 tournament win at the adidas Eurocamp in Italy last week.
Do not sleep on its significance. A world basketball insider declared to basketball.com.au: “Right now, it is the most important camp in Europe for NBA scouts.”
The Next Stars won its three games:
- NBL Next Stars 90 def. Team World 63
- NBL Next Stars 94 def. Eurocamp 2 88
- NBL Next Stars 66 def. Eurocamp 1 62 — adidas Eurocamp Final
NBL Next Stars GM Liam Santamaria then told basketball.com.au in an exclusive interview that Eurocamp wasn’t a landmark event for Australian basketball fans (yet), but its importance for Australia’s next-gen stars and the NBL Next Stars program's reputation shouldn’t be underestimated.
“The Next Stars program is a proven pathway to the NBA, and we're proud to offer our players – as well as other elite prospects from across Australia, New Zealand and the world – quality opportunities to develop their skills and showcase their talents,” Santamaria said.
“The Eurocamp hasn't traditionally been on the radar of the average Australian basketball fan, but it is the premier pre-draft showcase in Europe.
“It's an event where much of the best emerging talent in the world converges, and NBA front offices pay close attention.”
South East Melbourne Phoenix NBL Next Star Malique Lewis made the camp’s all-star five for the second consecutive year, Max Mackinnon was named the Finals MVP, and Melbourne United NBL Next Star Dash Daniels was awarded Best Defender.
“Australian basketball has a super-strong reputation globally - the performances of our national teams over a long period of time have helped to build that, as have our individual players and their performances in the best leagues in the world,” Santamaria added.
“The NBL and our Next Stars program form just part of that outstanding reputation, and having our group go undefeated at the Eurocamp, against such elite competition, further demonstrates that the environment, coaching and competition we provide in this part of the world is genuinely world-class.”
Eurocamp has showcased numerous NBA stars including: Rudy Gobert; Clint Capela; Jusuf Nurkić; Australian Dante Exum; Guillermo Hernangómez; Bogdan Bogdanović; Jaylen Brown; Bam Adebayo; Dennis Schröder; Danilo Gallinari; Nikola Vučević; Dario Šarić; Jakob Poeltl; Franz Wagner; Moe Wagner; Moritz Wagner; and Nikola Jović.
Outside the Class of 2026, Australians such as Rocco Zikarsky, Che Brogan, Lachlan Olbrich, Roman Siulepa, William McDowell-White, Dejan Vasiljevic, Alex Condon, Johnny Furphy, Ben Henshall, Luke Fennell, Taran Armstrong and Owen Foxwell have all competed at the camp.
“The global basketball landscape is always evolving, and there's no doubt the NBL Next Stars program – one of the most unique development pathways in world sport – needs to keep differentiating itself,” Santamaria said.
“Our participation in the adidas Eurocamp – and our group's success there – is part of that process.
“It provides a great snapshot of the quality of our coaching, the competitive environment we offer, and the individual development pathways we provide.
“A result like this helps to keep the NBL and the Next Stars on the radar of players, agents and families across the world who are weighing up their options.”
