Former NBL Coach of the Year Shawn Dennis is the new head coach of the “reborn” Tokyo SunRockers in the Japanese B.League.

Dennis, 60, was the NBL Coach of the Year in 2016 with the Townsville Crocs before moving to Japan to lead the Shiga Lakestars (2017-2021) and Nagoya Diamond Dolphins (2021-26).

“It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to take over as HC of such a prestigious club like the Sunrockers,” Dennis said.

“We will aim to play a disruptive defence that helps ignite a high-tempo offence.

“We want our style to help engage our fans and make them all feel part of the team as we unite as one to become  one of the strongest teams in B Premier.

“I can't wait to meet all of our fans and stakeholders as the newly branded Tokyo SunRockers.

“We are very much looking forward to meeting all members of the Sunrockers family and everyone involved as we are reborn as ‘Tokyo Sunrockers!’”

Dennis appointment coincides with former Melbourne United head coach and Australian Boomers associate head coach Dean Vickerman quitting United to take the reins of B.League rival Nagasaki Velca.

Japan is launching a new top-tier competition, the B.League Premier (B.Premier), in 2026–27 as part of a major restructuring of professional basketball in Japan.

The league has replaced the traditional promotion and relegation system with a permanent-membership model designed to create greater financial stability, long-term club investment and competitive balance.

The inaugural B.Premier season has 26 clubs split into Eastern and Western Conferences, including Dennis’ SunRockers and Vickerman’s Velca.

Teams will operate under strict financial regulations, including an NBA-style salary cap with spending limits ranging between ¥500 million and ¥800 million per club (AUD $5.3M to $8.5M).

A key change comes in the postseason format, with the Finals expanding into a home-and-away best-of-five championship series, increasing the scale and commercial appeal of the competition.

The Eastern Conference includes clubs such as Utsunomiya Brex, Chiba Jets, and Alvark Tokyo, while the Western Conference features teams such as Ryukyu Golden Kings, Osaka Evessa, and Hiroshima Dragonflies.

The restructuring puts additional pressure on the NBL, given its appeal to Australian coaches and players.

Five-time NBL championship coach Trevor Gleeson coached the Chiba Jets before taking over from Mike Wells at the Adelaide 36ers for NBL27, while Mike Downer remains at the helm of the Akita Northern Happinets.

"We're building a life here in Japan, I don't see us leaving anytime soon... I know for the rest of my life, I'll coach this game at some level," Downer told basketball.com.au website editor Brayden Heslehurst in May last year.

Dennis is taking over the renamed Sun Rockers Shibuya, which finished 30-30 in 2025-26.

“As a club, we have had a series of disappointing results in recent years, and I feel that we must approach the new season with stronger determination and greater responsibility than ever before,” SunRockers general manager Ryota Matsuoka said.

“As professionals, we will of course pursue victory, but at the same time, we must work on building the process to get there, and rediscover and reaffirm 'what Sunrockers basketball is’. “Sean Dennis, with his track record, is not only a coach who can lead a team to victory, but he is also very skilled at creating a culture based on a clear concept.

“I am strongly confident that he is the most suitable head coach to solidify the ‘emotionally moving basketball’ that Sunrockers has always championed and to take on the new mission of ‘continuing to deliver emotionally moving experiences’ together with us.’
