The Golden State Warriors have waived Australian two-way forward and former NBL Next Star Alex Toohey
Toohey was released to make way for the Warriors to sign former OKC Thunder Malevy Leons wing on a two-way deal after the Australian required season-ending knee injury.
Leons, a 6'9" forward, played 6 games for the Thunder last season and has averaged 14.6 points (51% FG and 44% 3PT), 7.6 rebounds, three assists and 1.8 steals in the G League.
The former NBL Next Star with the Sydney Kings averaged seven points, three rebounds and one assists in those two games for Santa Cruz.
He was drafted alongside fellow Aussies Tyrese Proctor, Lachlan Olbrich and fellow Next Star Rocco Zikarsky.
Toohey was widely regarded as the most NBA-ready prospect out of the NBL following his two seasons with the Kings but found it tough for his game to translate, even through his performances at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas in July.
The Canberra product's future is now up in the air but if reports of a season-ending knee injury are true, it rules out a return to the NBL in 2025-26.
The news is a disappointing development for Toohey, who was signed to a two-way deal by Golden State after being drafted 52nd overall, but didn't make a single appearance in the NBA and only played in two G League games for the Santa Cruz Warriors.
