Atlanta Hawks star Dyson Daniels has urged his younger brother, Dash Daniels, to "be himself" as comparisons between the siblings continue ahead of the NBL Next Star's push to boost his NBA prospects for next year's draft.
Appearing on an Atlanta Hawks edition of 'The Young Man and The Three' podcast with teammate Onyeka Okongwu, Daniels spoke about what his advice has been to his younger brother, who is in the middle of a rookie professional season in the NBL with Melbourne United.
"(The comparisons and hype has) already hit Dash, I mean, everyone says he plays exactly like me when they watch him play," last season's Most Improved Player in the NBA said on the podcast.
"So, I think for him, you can't get caught up in that, I've just got to push him to be himself basically. Go out there, work on your game, we have the same instincts basically defensively and both can't shoot.
"For him it's just about pushing himself... in this pre-draft coming up, I want to do a lot of work with him and push him and defend him to be better, because we both know what we need to be better at. It's just about getting with the right people, getting with the right trainers that are going to teach us these things and get the work in."
Dash, 17, has surpassed expectations for United this season, averaging 5.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists in more than 15 minutes per game while shooting an impressive 40% from the three-point line.
But like his older brother, who was a finalist for last season's Defensive Player of the Year, Dash's impact is mostly felt on the defensive end - taking on the toughest tasks in the NBL, including five-time MVP Bryce Cotton.
However, mock drafts for next year have had him all over the place, from as high as 10th, 14th and even in the 20s and Dyson said that's "outside noise" his brother can't listen to.
"It can be hard sometimes though, especially for him, people can put expectations on him to make the NBA and be a high draft pick or whatever but I just tell him you can't get caught up (with that), you've just got to be yourself, make plays, play free and when you play free, that's when you play your best basketball," he said.
"That's kind of what I tell him, don't worry about outside noise because there's going to be a lot of it and at a young age, it can be a little tough sometimes and I think he's starting to learn that."
Dyson has become one of the fastest rising stars in the NBA since his trade from New Orleans to Atlanta, culminating in him signing a four-year, USD $100m extension with the Hawks during the offseason.
And the man, who was selected at pick eight in the 2022 draft, said it was important Dash was ready for a "dogfight" in the pre-draft process.
"I did an individual pre-draft and I think doing that, it was cool but I didn't really have anyone to compete against," Dyson said.
"I think one thing I'm going to tell him, and we have the same agent, is it's important to have people who are going to push you as well and I think workout with people who are also in pre-draft, I'm going to get in there and help him as well just so he can get a feel of what it's like to have that competitiveness.
"Because going into those workouts, they're going to be competitive, it's a dogfight going into that.
"For me just having other people that are trying to achieve the same things that are going to push you, that's important to have."
