Former Sydney King Jason Cadee has declared Brian Goorjian as a favourite to take out the NBL's Coach of the Year award as his team propels towards championship favouritism following their recent run of form, including a win over league-leaders the Adelaide 36ers on the weekend.
Despite an inconsistent start to the season and several injuries to key players, including defensive stopper Bul Kuol, the Kings remain just two wins away from the 36ers in top spot.
With their win over Adelaide highlighted by a Player of the Game performance from new recruit and former NBA wing Torrey Craig, Sydney still have Boomers legend Matthew Dellavedova to return from concussion - increasing their chances of taking out first place to finish the regular season.
"They've done a great job, and this is why Goorj is well and truly in that Coach of the Year conversation," Cadee said on the latest edition of Cut to the Jase.
"They've managed to just juggle so many moving parts for a period of time, from a slower start than what everyone thought, to then starting to find a rhythm, to then injuries people in and out.
"Here we're staring down the barrel of Sydney maybe finishing on top spot, like who knows. But, yeah, they're just really impressive at the moment."
Cadee also believed the Kings form without Dellavedova eases the pressure on the 2016 NBA champion to come back into the fold as they head into playoffs.
"I've been commentating a few of their games, obviously, so I've seen it in person, that growth and how they slide Delly back in," he said.
"For me, you bring Delly back in, you let him come off the bench, and just be that piece that can fill multiple different problems when you need it. He can bring the ball up, he can come in and defend.
"They just get better again, and they've got a guy like him sitting on the sidelines, waiting to get ready to come back in.
"They don't have to rush him. So for Sydney, what a place to be in as he's coming in the back end of the season into finals."
Cadee also touched on Craig's return to the NBL specifically, the clash between Perth Wildcats teammates Jo Lual-Acuil and Kristian Doolittle, how John Jenkins has provided the 36ers with a major boost, the star bigs going into free agency and a look at the WNBL as he heaped praise on Bendigo Spirit star Izzy Borlase for her 42-point performance last round.
