Former NBA coach Fred Hoiberg's son an NBL target?

Former NBA player and coach Fred Hoiberg's son could be an in-demand product for NBL clubs after it was revealed the college sharpshooter was targeting Australian citizenship.

Sam Hoiberg, who enjoyed a successful four-year NCAA career under his dad at the Nebraska Cornhuskers, has started the process of applying for an Australian passport as he prepares to start his professional journey.

The 23-year-old shooting guard shot 36% from beyond the arc across his college career, which included a career-high average in points as Nebraska made it all the way to the Sweet 16 before being eliminated by Iowa.

His perimeter prowess and potential to play as a local makes Hoiberg and interesting prospect for NBL teams, in a league where shooting is a hot commodity.

"One really cool thing about Sam is, my wife was born in Australia, so Sam could have the opportunity," Fred Hoiberg said in a recent press conference talking about what the future holds for his son.

"Carol got her passport a couple weeks ago in Chicago and we started the citizenship process for Sam to be able to play as a native over there, which would open up a lot of doors.

"So, he's gonna have options. I know he wants to ultimately get into the broadcasting thing.

"He doesn't want to get into coaching, which he's my smart kid. My daughter's the smartest. But anyway (he has) the opportunity to play this game and I told him play it as long as he can.

"It's a lot more fun playing than it is going into this side of it and he's gonna have some good options in front of him."

Hoiberg has also had workouts with NBA teams, including the Indiana Pacers and more coming in the near future.

"Not only the Pacers, but he worked out, he had a good workout with the Timberwolves the week before and he's been been to Memphis," Hoiberg said.

"He's got a couple more scheduled (0:08) when in the next, I think, week and a half.

"It is, it's fun to see him have the opportunity to go through this process."

Hoiberg is a volume three-point shooter as well, recording 2.4 attempts per game in his senior year.

Tyler Robertson from the Sydney Kings was the leading three-point shooter across the NBL (with more than two attempts per game), shooting at a clip of 48% in a breakout season before he suffered a serious shoulder injury late in the season and missed his team's NBL26 championship victory.

Hoiberg's dad, Fred, played for the Pacers, Bulls and Timberwolves before coaching Iowa State, the Chicago Bulls and now Nebraska.
