Jason Cadee breaks down what each NBL team needs for the run home this season
- Jason Cadee played 15 seasons and 424 games in the NBL for Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Gold Coast
- He played for Anthony Petrie at the Gold Coast Rollers in the NBL1 North
- Alanna Smith, Ezi Magbegor and Bec Allen will feature in the Unrivaled 3x3 competition, starting in Miami on January 5
A former Brisbane Bullets player should be the next coach to take over the franchise following the failed experiment that was Stu Lash, according to Jason Cadee as the man who played 15 seasons in the NBL revealed his Christmas wish list for each team.
As we head into the Christmas and New Year period for the NBL, which is full of games with the league currently in the midst of 12 straight days of games, the former Bullet himself named Anthony Petrie as the coach he believed should be next in line as Brisbane looks for some much-needed stability.
The Bullets announced they had parted ways with Lash last week with three-time championship player Darryl 'D-Mac' McDonald taking over as interim coach - making the seventh coach in five years for Brisbane.
Cadee made the wish for each team on the latest edition of Cut to the Jase, where WNBA and Australian Opals superstars Alanna Smith and Ezi Magbegor were his special guests.
CADEE'S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST FOR NBL TEAMS
Adelaide 36ers
Santa brings Bryce Cotton some rest in the New Year.
Cadee: "He's playing a lot of minutes, he's getting a lot of attention and Derek Rucker said it and I don't disagree with him, he might be playing his best basketball we've ever seen in the NBL, which is crazy to think about. But the way he's doing multiple things, I just hope Santa flies in, drops him off a massage chair or something and just can give him some freshness because in the New Year, Adelaide's going to need him and Adelaide have a real chance to win themselves a title."
Brisbane Bullets
Appoint Anthony Petrie as head coach and give Brisbane someone they can build around.
Cadee: "I mean, I could have a few wishes for Brisbane but I'm going to go here because, not because he's one of my best mates but because I truly believe that they need someone in there that not just Brisbane but Southeast Queensland can get behind, someone that can bring some direction. I've seen him in the flesh do it at other levels, I've seen him do it at a pro level as a player, but I just think Anthony Petrie should be the Bullets next head coach. Now listen, rookie head coach, all these different things - you could say that they've gone from (Andrej Lemanis) to James Duncan to Sam Mackinnon for two weeks to (Greg Vanderjagt) for the rest of that season to Justin Schueller to Stu Lash to now who knows. Now listen, a Trevor Gleeson, a Paul Henare, those guys are established, I can see everyone's want for that and that could be a really great decision. But the one thing I do think about Brisbane is Peach is built into that Southeast Queensland ecosystem. He played there for two years to finish out his career, he played for the Gold Coast, his kids have grown up in the region playing for Queensland... he has a level of respect amongst current NBL players, Australian players, whether they played with him or didn't. He understands some of the juniors coming through, so he would attract talent... But most of all I think he would give the fans of Brisbane and and the people of that club something that they would want to get behind a person."
Cairns Taipans
Get their full team together/healthy and see what they can do post-Christmas.
Cadee: "Just get their full team back healthy and let's see what they can do post-Christmas. Let's see everyone on the floor and see what maybe could have been or can they get get a little run together. That's that's my wish for them."
Illawarra Hawks
Figure out their best five, introduce Sam Froling back and see if they can string some wins together.
Cadee: "Figure out their best five. Who is your go-to five? I don't think they know it at the moment. They've got to introduce Sam Froling back in and I hope they don't rush him, but ideally for them they can find their best five and Sam compliments that until he's at full health."
Melbourne United
Decide who their go-to guy is and build late-game structure around that person.
Cadee: "Just decide who their go-to guy is. Who's the guy they believe late game can make plays for them and everyone else will benefit? They've got enough pieces that it could be anyone. But who's that guy that we noticeably see has the ball and they run stuff for in the last four minutes, five minutes of a game?"
New Zealand Breakers
Keep momentum they discovered in earlier in December and try find a way into the six.
Cadee: "Find a way because right now they're going to find a way into the six by the look of it or be there thereabouts. How do they keep that rolling in through Christmas, out of Christmas, and just find their way in the six where potentially they're a team that can cause some trouble?"
Perth Wildcats
Bring Jaron Rillie a new hamstring. Decide who is “the guy” and play through him to give them some direction.
Cadee: "Jaron Rillie's hamstring, can Santa please bring that back because I think they need him. Then similar thing, I think they've got too many people who are trying to be the guy at the moment. Not from a bad place, but that's how they're trying to be. Just who's their main guy and let's make it noticeable. So then other guys can play off that."
SEM Phoenix
Get healthy and group back together. Santa brings Nathan Sobey a nice reset for the second half of the season.
Cadee: "They haven't had a full healthy group for the whole year I don't reckon and they've had some changes. So, for me it's similar to Cairns in a way, get your full group healthy. Let's see what happens after Christmas because they've been very good to this point without a full group."
Sydney Kings
Find their best eight-man rotation and continue the consistency they’re currently on.
Cadee: "I think they're starting to, but who's your eight? Get it together. They've obviously found a good rhythm now. I think they've got a better balance of KD, then Delly but who's your eight? They're going to need a Jaylin Galloway and people like that if they're going to win it. They're going to need those guys to be in a position where they can also make plays. So just find your eight guys."
Tasmania JackJumpers
Help Bryce Hamilton be more assertive and everyone else feed-off that.
Cadee: "Let's help Bryce Hamilton be more assertive. He's only young but let's let's help him feel like he can go out there and play and we'll make it work off him. Bryce, whatever you need, we're going to help you. You just got to go out and play hard and get things done and we'll work around you. I think if they can do that, it'll unlock him even further and I think Tassie's chances increase."
