Australian superstar Josh Giddey delivers career-best season with triple-double surge

Australian Chicago Bulls star point guard Josh Giddey produced the best season of his NBA career, but declared: “I’m 23, I’ve got a lot of room to grow."

“This offseason will probably be my best one yet, and I need to take that next step – continue to lead these guys and help this team win more games,” he added.

Giddey played just 53 games in an injury-impacted season, straining his hamstring on December 30, 2025, against Joe Ingles’ Minnesota Timberwolves.

He averaged 17 points, 8.3 rebounds, 9.1 assists and 13 triple-doubles – one in every 4.1 games as the Bulls faltered to 31-51 and out of playoff contention early. It cost head coach Billy Donovan his job today (Wednesday, April 22, 2026).

“I don’t like to look at myself in halves of a season,” he said.

“Injuries played a part – I was in and out of the lineup, and my minutes fluctuated.

“Every player goes through stretches where they don’t feel like themselves, and then stretches where they feel like the best player in the world.

“Pre All-Star break, I felt like I was finding my rhythm. Then the injury happened, and it disrupted things.”

Giddey admitted he’s still learning how to be both a primary option and a facilitator.

“It’s tough because you get stuck in both mindsets,” Giddey admitted.

“My job as a point guard is to get guys looks, but at the same time, it’s not all about that.

“You’ve got to be aggressive as well. It’s about finding the balance. I feel like I’ve done a good job of that as my career has gone on – knowing when to be aggressive and when to get others involved.

“It’s a feel for the game. You can’t go into a game predetermined because every defence throws different things at you.

“When the game’s on the line, making the right play doesn’t always mean scoring. It can mean finding someone else. But there are times you need to go get a bucket — that’s probably the next step for me.

“(But) I guess it depends on who you ask.

“In the NBA, you can point to any team and identify their No.1 option.

“It’s hard to say – you don’t really know until you do know. I’ve always been very confident in who I am as a player. I believe I can impact those around me, and that’s where I want to get to.

“Winning is probably the next step for me. All the individual statistical stuff is good, but if it doesn’t result in wins and playoff appearances, it doesn’t count for much.

“I’m confident I can be that guy, but it helps having good teammates around you. I’m fortunate I get to play with guys who make the game easy for me as well.”

But he revealed it was a goal to balance running the team and being a scorer.

“Every player does,” he said.

“I love having the ball, I love the confidence I get from coaches and teammates.

“I’m confident I can help this team win games and get back to the playoffs – that’s where we want to be. But it’s not just me, it’s a collective effort.

I’ve got to find ways to lead guys, empower guys, and get us back in the right direction.

“I’m confident I can do that. Every team that’s successful has that player they go to when the game’s on the line.

“That’s probably the next part of my game – translating what I do into winning, especially in crunch time. Being able to step up in those situations.”

Season Snapshot

Games: 53 │ Minutes: 1,707 (32.2 mpg)
Points: 913 (17.2 ppg) │ Rebounds: 443 (8.4 rpg) │ Assists: 489 (9.2 apg)
FG: 318–705 (45.1%) │ 3PT: 103–279 (36.9%) │ FT: 174–226 (77.0%)

Triple-double production becomes his signature

Giddey’s ability to control games across all statistical categories defined his season.

He climbed to 30 career triple-doubles, surpassing Michael Jordan’s total of 28 during the season, and placing himself among the NBA’s most productive all-around guards.

His 13 triple-doubles in 2025–26 trailed only the likes of Nikola Jokić and Jalen Johnson in overall volume.

Peak stretch: March playmaking surge

Giddey’s season reached another level in March, where he produced a sustained stretch of elite playmaking:

  • 19.4 points per game
  • 10.6 rebounds per game
  • 12.2 assists per game
  • Three triple-doubles in 10 days

This run included:

  • 21 points, 13 rebounds, 17 assists (OT win at Golden State)
  • 27 points, 15 assists at the Lakers
  • 16 points, 15 rebounds, 13 assists vs Memphis

Game-by-game impact and role evolution

Giddey opened the season in a primary ball-handling role, immediately producing:

  • 32 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists vs New York (Oct 31)
  • 29 points, 15 rebounds, 12 assists vs Philadelphia
  • 26 points, 13 rebounds, 13 assists in a 2OT game at Utah

Through the first 30 games, he consistently operated as Chicago’s offensive organiser, averaging near triple-double numbers across multiple stretches.

Mid-season availability interruptions (inactive and DNP stretches in January–February) disrupted continuity, but he returned to form late in the season.

Late-season production and consistency

From late February through March, Giddey re-established rhythm:

  • 27 points vs Detroit (Feb 21)
  • 20–14–10 triple-double vs Milwaukee (Mar 1)
  • 17 assists at Golden State (Mar 10)
  • 19 assists vs Cleveland (season high)

His playmaking ceiling — particularly in high-possession games — became a defining feature of Chicago’s offence.

Season highs

  • Points: 32 – vs New York (Oct 31)
  • Rebounds: 15 – multiple games
  • Assists: 19 – vs Cleveland
  • 3PT Made: 6 – at LA Lakers
  • Minutes: 43:12 – at Golden State (OT)

By the Numbers

  • 13 triple-doubles (one every 4.1 games)
  • Nine games with 10+ assists and 10+ rebounds
  • Five-game span averaging a triple-double
  • Career-high scoring average (17.2 ppg)
  • Career-best three-point shooting (36.9%)
