Kendric Davis has the championship, series MVP and now “if he isn’t in the NBA” he’ll look to re-sign with the Sydney Kings to chase his dream of becoming the NBL’s face of the league, writes Matt Logue from CODE Sports Basketball.
In an emotional interview with CODE Sports in the moments after steering the Kings to banner six, Davis opened up on his future plans.
The diminutive American guard has started preliminary talks to extend his stay in Sydney – and barring a big overseas opportunity emerging – he intends to re-sign.
“Things change, but if I’m not putting on an NBA jersey, I’d hope to be here in Sydney,” Davis told CODE Sports after dropping a masterclass 35 points and 14 assists in the decider.
“A lot of things have got to go right, but this (the Kings) is my family and I’d hope to be here.
“We just won a championship and I want to celebrate with my teammates.
“We’ve been in talks (to re-sign), but journey has just started.
“I’m 26 years old and in basketball things change every day. If I told you I’d be in Sydney last year, I would have thought you’d be lying.”
Much has been made of Davis’ personal rivalry with Adelaide superstar Bryce Cotton.
The gun duo have gone at each other the entire season, with neither backing down in their quest to be the best.
It would be easy to assume they hate each other based on the multiple heated verbal exchanges throughout the championship series, but Davis insists he has nothing but admiration for Cotton.
“I respect Bryce to the moon,” he said.
