Stanford’s ACC All-Freshman Team star Lara Somfai has transferred to Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs, joining incoming Australian freshman Jessie-May Hall and soon-to-be sophomore centre Sarah Portlock in Fort Worth for the 2026-27 NCAA women’s basketball season.
"I just wanted to go somewhere stable, where I know I will be in a position to love what I do, and love playing basketball again, that was my priority," Somfai exclusively told basketball.com.au about her decision to transfer to TCU.
"The coaching staff is absolutely incredible, and I truly cannot wait."
South Australian forward Somfai surprised some by entering the transfer portal after an impressive freshman season with the Cardinals, where she averaged 10.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game – collecting several freshman award honours along the way.
The 19-year-old's first season in college basketball was headlined by a dominant 15-point and 23-rebound performance against Pitt in February, which she joined the Bounce Pass Breakdown to talk about, but Stanford struggled in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with a record of 8-10 in conference play and 21-14 overall for the season.
Somfai, who also joined the basketball.com.au podcast Cut to the Jase in January, is one of Australia's top young talents playing college basketball after a stellar junior career, which included representing the green and gold at junior international tournaments as well as taking South Australia Metro to a national junior title in 2023.
One of her opponents in that championship game from New South Wales, Jessie-May Hall, who is playing in the 2026 NBL1 East season, committed to TCU in August last year.
Somfai reached double figures in scoring in 20 games last season and posted five games of 15-plus rebounds, showcasing why she was considered a prized recruit from Stanford, which was once a powerhouse of women's college basketball.
“I’m incredibly grateful for my time at Stanford and for everyone who has been part of my journey here,” Somfai posted to Instagram, explaining her decision to enter the portal.
“This program has meant so much to me, and I’ll always be thankful for my coaches, teammates, and the entire community that have supported me along the way.
“The relationships I’ve built and the experiences I’ve had here are something I’ll carry with me forever. There was a point where I truly saw a future for myself here, which makes this decision especially difficult.
“With so many changes happening within the program and seeing a number of my close teammates move on, it’s been a challenging time to reflect on what comes next.
“After a lot of thought, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.
“This was not an easy choice, and it comes with a lot of appreciation and respect for everything Stanford has given me. I’ll always be cheering on this program and am thankful for everyone who has been part of my journey on the farm.”
