Mohan Koo joins minority ownership group as Adelaide Lightning enter new WNBL chapter.

South Australian cybersecurity expert Mohan Koo is part of the new minority ownership of the WNBL club Adelaide Lightning.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to team up with such an accomplished group of entrepreneurs to grow the Adelaide Lightning," Koo said.

"The Lightning has been a South Australian icon for decades and we’re committed to securing the team’s long-term success, both on and off the court.

“With the season just around the corner, we can’t wait to see the Lightning back in action.”

Koo is part of a group of investors that include Jeevan Koo, James Begley and John Paul Drake.

The State Government remains the majority owner after they bailed out the club in May with Premier Peter Malinauskas committing $571,000 a year for three years ($1,713,000) with the team training at the $88 million South Australian Institute of Sport.

Adelaide Lightning CEO Melanie MacGillivray said it was a coup for South Australia to attract state-based owners.

"“This is an exciting new chapter for the team," she said.

"To have such a passionate group of South Australians investing in Adelaide Lightning signals the importance of this team and women’s basketball in the state,” she said.

“As the Lightning grows, all team decisions will be centred around positive outcomes for the South Australian community and for Australian female basketballers.”

The Lightning announced a new major sponsor at the same time with Drakes Supermarkets signing a multi-year deal.

Adelaide plays its first game of WNBL26 on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
