Australian basketball legend Andrew Bogut is $9,500 lighter in the pocket, fined by the NBL for violating the league’s Code of Conduct and Social Media Policy.
The now Sydney Kings assistant coach and former basketball.com.au columnist took aim at the Adelaide 36ers boss Grant Kelley on X and in an alleged incident after the Kings played the 36ers on March 27, 2026.
It shouldn’t be too much of a drama for the 41-year-old NBA champion to come up with the cash – he earned USD $117.2M (AUD $169.6M) during his 14-year NBA career.
The $9,500 penalty is the maximum amount the NBL issue under the policy. It's about 0.006% of Bogut's total NBA career earnings.
NBL Communications said: "Sydney Kings Assistant Coach and co-owner Andrew Bogut has been fined $9,500 following an investigation under the NBL Code of Conduct and Social Media Policy.
“The sanction was determined following a review of Mr Bogut’s conduct, including a series of social media posts and an incident following a game on 27 March 2026.
"The club has been formally notified, and Mr. Bogut retains the right to appeal.”
The Sydney Kings said: “We are aware the NBL has sanctioned and issued a fine to Assistant Coach Andrew Bogut regarding commentary during the final series.
“The club is supporting Andrew throughout this process, and no further comment will be made at this time.”
The 36ers released a statement on March 30, saying they had given notice to the NBL about concerns over alleged comments by Bogut about Kelley after Game Two of the series in Adelaide.
Kelley told CODE Sports Basketball Bogut targeted him in front of his son in the tunnels at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre just moments after an explosive confrontation between Kendric Davis and Bryce Cotton.
“He looked at me and I looked back and said ‘I’ve got nothing to say to you, mate’, no swearing, and he goes ‘get f***ed you fat f***ing c***’,” Kelley alleged to CODE Sports.
“He’s a nasty piece of work.”
Bogut then gave his version of events to CODE Sports' Michael Randall and Matt Logue.
“Grant came to my face talking shit in the tunnel, which is a space he shouldn’t be in immediately post-game,” Bogut said.
“I didn’t go to him. He sought me out. I talked shit back as he waddled off.
“He is now playing victim as only he can. That is the last I will comment on the stupidity of this whole interaction.”
Bogut later tweeted an image of Family Guy's main character, Peter Griffin, with a basketball in each hand, which Kelley took offense to. He then backed it up with another cryptic Instagram story following Sydney's win in game three to lead the series 2-1.
