Highlights

Angus Glover drains six threes in a 24-point return as Phoenix beat Cairns 101–90 in Round 9.

Leftie Angus Glover missed two games with an ankle injury but didn't miss a beat in his first game back, knocking down six threes in a 25-minute, 24-point performance to lead South East Melbourne Phoenix to a 101-90 road win against Cairns Taipans in Round 9 of NBL26.

"I can’t take any credit for it," Phoenix head coach Josh King said.

"Glove makes the shots. Probably should’ve brought him up here. Great to have him back.

"I wasn’t sure we’d have him for this game, but he recovered quickly from the ankle. He plays with confidence.

"His teammates recognise when he’s hot and get him the ball. He works on it every day.

"We’ve got a lot of good shooters and Glover is one of them.

"A lot of times I don’t realise how good a performance is until I watch the film.

"Glove is playing with confidence and I’m happy he’s on our team."

Glover, who came off the bench, finished with 24 points (8-from-16) on 6-from-12 from three, two rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Phoenix moved into second on the ladder are 8-3 with a +92 points differential. The Adelaide 36ers are also 8-3 but have a +54 differential.

South East Melbourne led 64-39 at the half but didn't close it out as Cairns won the third quarter 23-20 and the last 28-17.

"I just told the guys — they probably get frustrated with me — every play has a life of its own," King added.

"I always want to be perfect, and I know it’ll never be perfect.

"Collectively, the energy wasn’t the same in the second half. The ball got sticky, we weren’t moving as much.

"We’d had 22 turnovers and 19 in our last two games. At half-time tonight we had one; we finished with six.

"Much better taking care of the ball. It’s a standard you set. You’re always working on something, always being evaluated.

"Our habits weren’t the best in the second half.Still proud of the first half and that we did enough to get the win."

Six Phoenix players scored in double figures led by Glover's 24. Nathan Sobey added 17, John Brown III 13, Wes Iwundu 12, Jordan Hunter 11 and Owen Foxwell 10.

Cairns had five: Jack McVeigh (22); Mojave King (16); Admiral Schofield (14); Kyrin Galloway (13); and Andrew Andrews (11).

What Happened

The Phoenix established their dominance early, taking a 28-24 lead after the first quarter before breaking the game open with a commanding 36-15 second period. This explosive quarter gave South East Melbourne a substantial 64-39 advantage heading into halftime, effectively setting the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Cairns showed resilience in the second half, outscoring the visitors 51-37 across the third and fourth quarters, but the damage had already been done. The Taipans managed to trim what had been a 27-point deficit, but couldn't overcome the massive first-half performance from Phoenix.

Angus Glover proved to be the difference-maker off the bench for South East Melbourne, connecting on 6-from-12 from beyond the arc en route to a game-high 24 points. Nathan Sobey added 17 points while John Brown III contributed a solid all-around performance with 13 points and six rebounds.

For the Taipans, Jack McVeigh led the way with 22 points on efficient 7-from-14 shooting, including 4-from-8 from three-point range. Andrew Andrews delivered a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists, though his seven turnovers proved costly in the defeat. Mojave King added 16 points while Admiral Schofield contributed 14 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort.

The Phoenix's defensive pressure was exceptional, forcing 19 Taipans turnovers while committing only six of their own. This 13-turnover differential created additional scoring opportunities for South East Melbourne, who also displayed superior marksmanship from distance, connecting on 14 three-pointers compared to Cairns' 11. Despite the Taipans holding a rebounding advantage (43-34), their inability to protect the ball ultimately proved decisive.

With this victory, South East Melbourne Phoenix strengthened their hold on third place with a 15-9 record, while Cairns dropped to 12-13, remaining in sixth position but with their playoff hopes now facing increased pressure.
