Josh Green is a physical Australian guard that quickly established himself as an exciting NBA player, competing for both the Charlotte Hornets and the Dallas Mavericks.

Green is a defensive beast and will undoubtedly be part of the Australian Boomers set-up for its march to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.

Playing Style

Josh Green’s playing style is characterised by his exceptional athleticism, defensive prowess and improving offensive game. His quick feet and long wingspan make him a formidable perimeter defender, capable of guarding multiple positions.

Offensively, Green has shown steady improvement since entering the league. Initially known more for his slashing ability and transition play, he has worked hard on his outside shooting with his percentage climbing every season.

Career

While Josh Green was born and raised in Sydney, he took his first major leap to making the NBA moving to the United States as a teenager. He quickly rose up the ranks of high school basketball, making himself a five-star recruit and a McDonald’s All-American. Green committed to Arizona where in his one and done season averaged 12 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists a night.

This led him to be selected 18th overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2020 NBA Draft. In his rookie season, Green’s playing time was limited but showed flashes of potential, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

In the off-season, Green was a part of the Australian Boomers team the brought home a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Green played very limited time by was still a crucial part of the roster.

The 2021-22 season saw him take on a larger role with the Mavericks, in particular in the playoffs as he helped their run to the Western Conference Finals.

The 2022-23 season marked a significant step forward for him. He set new career-high with 29 points against the Utah Jazz in February 2023. This improvement led to the Mavericks signing Green to a three-year, $41 million extension in October 2023.

Green’s final season with the Mavericks in 2023-24 saw him play a crucial role in their NBA Finals campaign. Even though they fell short to the Boston Celtics, his performances throughout the playoffs further cemented himself as a valuable two-way player.

In July 2024, Green was involved in a six team trade, the largest trade in NBA history, which saw him traded from Dallas to the Charlotte Hornets. He started 67 out of 68 games in his first year as a Hornet, averaging 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists. The move saw him gain an increased role and opportunity to succeed on both ends individually.

He remains with the Hornets heading into the 2025-26 season.
