- Rebecca Allen said" "Phoenix has allowed her to thrive; she looks happy and free"
Australian Opals teammate and WNBA star Rebecca Allen said WNBL MVP Sami Whitcomb "look(ed) happy and free" during her first season at the 2025 Finalist Phoenix Mercury.
Whitcomb, 37, had an outstanding 2025, winning the WNBL MVP and championship Bendigo Spirit before signing with the Phoenix Mercury earlier this year. She played for the Seattle Storm in 2023 and 2024.
"Sami Whitcomb has had an incredible season and a phenomenal couple of years," Allen told basketball.com.au.
"Phoenix has allowed her to thrive; she looks happy and free.
"Her chemistry with AT (Alyssa Thomas) is great — if you help off, Sami only needs a sliver of space and she’ll let it fly.
"Nate Tibbetts is a terrific coach and communicator, and that environment suits her."
Lead guard Whitcomb played 23 of 43 games off the bench for the Mercury as they marched into the WNBA Finals. But her chance to win both an WNBL and WNBA title in the same year was dashed by WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson, who led the Las Vegas Aces to their third championship in three years. The Aces swept the Mercury 4-0.
