Gangurrus 3x3 women target Commonwealth podium

The Gangurrus 3x3 women head to Scotland with a roster blending FIBA 3x3 World Cup experience and rising international firepower. Marena Whittle, Amy Atwell and Emma Clarke – three pivotal pieces of Australia’s 2026 World Cup campaign – have been selected, with Asia Cup champion Lara McSpadden adding crucial height and versatility to the unit.

Head Coach Damon Lowery returns to steer the women’s program through another major event, building on the consistent international form that has made the Gangurrus a global benchmark in the half-court format.

Hannah Hank is the only player from the World Cup silver medal-winning side not going to the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Wagstaff headlines Gangurrus 3x3 men

Perth Wildcats veteran Jesse Wagstaff has been named in the four-man Gangurrus men’s squad, with the veteran forward set to pull on the green and gold once more at a Commonwealth Games.

“Every time you get the chance to pull on the green and gold at a Commonwealth Games, it means something very special,” Wagstaff said.

He links up with Gangurrus regulars Jonah Antonio and Jarred Bairstow, while Samuel McDaniel returns as a major inclusion after the injury that ruled him out of this year’s FIBA 3x3 World Cup.

Cairns Taipans' Adam Forde continues at the helm as head coach, charged with translating the men’s program’s steady international growth into Glasgow silverware.

Wombats wheelchair 3x3 squads loaded with Paralympic pedigree

The Australian Wombats 3x3 women combine seasoned campaigners with emerging talent. Hannah Dodd and Georgia Munro-Cook bring leadership and tournament nous, joined by exciting young guns Taishar Ovens and Ebony Stevenson. Rob Pike will continue as Head Coach.

On the men’s side, Paris Paralympians Tom O’Neill-Thorne, Luke Pople and Eithen Leard return to spearhead the Wombats’ defence of their 2022 Birmingham gold. They are joined by Victoria and Thuringia Bulls standout Tomas Klein, with Matt McShane locked in as Head Coach.

Pople said the chance to chase another Commonwealth title with familiar faces was a driving force for the group.

“Winning gold in 2022 was an incredible moment for us, but we’ve all kept pushing to improve and grow as a group,” Pople said.

“To have the chance to go again and represent Australia on that stage is something we don’t take for granted, and we’re excited by the challenge ahead in Glasgow.”

Depth and resilience on show heading to Glasgow

Chef de Mission Petria Thomas OLY said the squads underline the depth being produced across Australian basketball.

“These squads reflect the incredible depth, talent and resilience we continue to see across Australian basketball,” Thomas said. “It’s particularly exciting to welcome our debutants into the green and gold, while also recognising the outstanding experience of our returning athletes.”

Basketball Australia CEO Matt Scriven echoed the sentiment, pointing to the elite pathways supporting both programs.

“Both our Basketball 3x3 and Wheelchair Basketball 3x3 programs continue to produce athletes who perform on the international stage and embrace the demands of the Commonwealth Games environment,” Scriven said.

The Australian 3x3 campaigns tip off on Friday, 24 July and run through to the medal games on 29 July, broadcast live on Seven, the Official Broadcast Partner of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
