The Chicago Sky have transitioned from late-arriving contenders to champions – and now into a full roster reset.

After breaking through for their first WNBA title in 2021, the Sky have undergone significant change across their playing group and coaching staff. The appointment of Tyler Marsh signals a new direction focused on development, identity and long-term growth.

Australian Connection

Rebecca Allen (2025)
Melbourne wing Rebecca Allen joined the Sky as part of the WNBA’s growing Australian presence in 2025, bringing elite perimeter defence and three-point shooting.

  • Proven 3-and-D role player
  • International experience with the Opals
  • Fits Chicago’s spacing and defensive schemes

Allen moved back to her first WNBA club, New York Liberty for the 2026 WNBA season.

Team History

Chicago entered the WNBA in 2006 and spent its early years building toward contention.

  • 2014: First WNBA Finals appearance (lost to Phoenix)
  • 2021: First championship – defeated Phoenix Mercury

The 2021 title team, led by Candace Parker, Courtney Vandersloot and Kahleah Copper, was built on ball movement, experience and late-season momentum.

That championship established the Sky as a legitimate destination franchise.

Post-Title Transition

Since the 2021 title, Chicago has undergone a clear reset:

  • Departure of championship core players
  • Coaching turnover
  • Shift toward younger roster construction

The franchise is now balancing competitiveness with long-term development.

2026 Identity

Chicago profiles as:

  • Developing roster with veteran support pieces
  • System-first team under new coaching leadership
  • Playoff-chasing but not yet a contender

The focus is no longer short-term success – it’s building the next core.
