Perth went into NBL27 without a PG, and D-Ruck says a price must to be paid to Basketball Gods.

Former NBL MVP Derek Rucker has put the absolute blowtorch to the Perth Wildcats for not signing a point guard in the NBL27 off-season.

"I hope the Perth Wildcats lose most of their games - or all their games - until they pay their penance to the basketball gods for coming into this season with this incomplete line-up," Rucker, 59, hammered on NBL Overtime.

"They need to pay a price. They need to get Brandon Knight ($277,000) out there.

"And what's the time frame, Damon (Lowery)? I'm giving them 11 games - a third of the season - to pay their debt to the basketball universe.

"Then they can get back to it, and I will judge them based on their performances at that time.

Rucker then offered the Red Army an open invitation on his next visit this weekend.

"I am going out West. Red Army, I'll see you Saturday night. Come see me. I love you.

"I love you, Danny Mills? I love you, Mark Arena, John Rillie - you're my man.

"But I'm open to discussion. Let's talk it out."

The Wildcats announced NBA veteran Knight's signing last week. He still hasn't arrived in Perth, and the Wildcats showed what it was like without a floor general in their first-game loss to South East Melbourne Phoenix, shown up by an 18-year-old - NBL Next Star Dash Daniels ($115,000).

Knight, who turns 35 on December 1, was unveiled as the Wildcats' third and final import, with just five days before the season starts.

The 1.88 floor general from Florida burst out of the blocks in his first NBA season in 2011, when the Detroit Pistons selected him 8th overall in the NBA Draft. He made the 2012 All-Rookie First Team.

Knight is Perth's third crack at a lead guard after then five-time MVP Bryce Cotton ($473,900) stunningly left the club during a he-said-he-said free agency saga after NBL25.

American Mason Jones lasted five games at the start of NBL26, and David Duke Jr. showed promise before injury disrupted his season.

Duke Jr. signed with Pallacanestro Varese in Italy.

Mills, Arena and Rillie have hardly been idle in the off-season, but their yoke-like quest to find a point guard has continued since Cotton stunningly left the club at the end of NBL25.

Perth's depth chart is stacked with talent but, until a week ago, had the most glaring gap in the league until they signed Knight.

Knight is signed but still hasn't arrived in Australia and will miss Thursday night's historic clash with Cotton's Adelaide 36ers. Cotton comes back into town to play his 300th NBL game after dropping his 7,000th point against Melbourne United in Round 1.

How to read this. The SC column is the Round 1 SuperCoach NBL score. Three players on the roster have no Round 1 score and are marked DNP with the reason, never 0: a zero would say they took the floor and produced nothing. We calculate each score from the official NBL box score (points, plus one per rebound, two per assist, three per steal, three per block, minus two per turnover, plus five for a double-double or 10 for a triple-double) and then check it against SuperCoach’s own figure. All 11 players who played agree exactly, and their points sum to 79, which is Perth’s final score. The Status column is availability as at 22 September, not Round 1: Dylan Windler and Jesse Wagstaff both played in Round 1 and are currently out. Blake Nielsen, announced by Perth in June as a development player and since confirmed to have had an ACL reconstruction, is not listed: the NBL carries him on neither its roster tracker nor its injury list, and he is not in the SuperCoach register, so he cannot be selected, priced or scored. Brandon Knight joined SuperCoach after the most recent snapshot we hold of its production player list, so his profile link was checked by hand and confirmed on 22 September 2026 before publication.

The detail behind this chart
Last updated: September 14, 2026.
Tana Kopa is on the chart from 6 September, on Peter Brown's instruction and the club's own signing release, which calls him a West Australian guard signed as a development player on a two-year deal. He was named in this note rather than placed until now because no position had been published. The column is ours, not the club's: the release says guard without saying which, and the point-guard column is already three deep, so he is shown at shooting guard.
Brandon Knight fills the point guard slot Perth had been holding all pre-season, and completes the roster. The Wildcats signed the 34-year-old on 14 September, days out from the season, ending a pursuit that began 18 months earlier when he was first linked to the club as an injury replacement for David Duke Jr. He was the eighth pick of the 2011 NBA draft, out of Kentucky, and played 451 regular-season games across a decade for Detroit, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Houston, Cleveland and Dallas. He takes Perth's third import place alongside Dylan Windler and Kristian Doolittle. Last season he averaged 18.0 points and 6.3 assists in 20 games for Mets de Guaynabo in Puerto Rico, the club Bryce Cotton also played for. Jaron Rillie is still recovering from hamstring surgery, which is why he sits behind Knight rather than beside him.
Jimmy Whitt has signed as a nominated replacement player on a one-year contract. The 6ft 3in guard arrives from the Gold Coast Rollers, for whom he averaged 22.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists a game before they swept Ipswich 2-0 in the NBL1 North grand final series. He is named here rather than placed in the rotation because the club has not given a position, and he carries no import marker because his classification has not been stated. Blake Nielsen has had a reconstruction on a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and the club expects him to miss the entirety of the 2026-27 season, so he moves from the depth chart to the note; he remains a development player on the roster and neither he nor Whitt counts against the eleven. Marley Sam has a sprained ligament in his wrist and will be reassessed in two weeks, a timeline that keeps him available well before the season opens, so he is still projected as the third-string point guard. Angus Brandt fills the back-up centre spot this chart previously carried as an unfilled local slot; his depth position is our projection, not the club's. Anthony Dell'Orso, signed for three years out of the NCAA, is projected to start at shooting guard ahead of Elijah Pepper. Knight’s own placement is not a projection: Peter Brown and the club both name him as the starting point guard.
3 of the 13 players shown are imports; 2 of the 13 players shown are development players; 1 of the 13 players shown is a player carrying an injury.
The roster is full: all 11 contracted spots are taken. 13 players are shown above; 2 development players sit outside that cap and do not count against it.
On the roster but not projected in the rotation above: Jimmy Whitt (nominated replacement player); Blake Nielsen (development player, out for the season).
How to read these charts
Positions run across the top and depth runs down, so the top row is the projected starting five. A dash means no player is currently projected in that slot. Where a club has not named a position, the placement shown is our reading and the detail above says so.
