Australian Josh Giddey's NBA career is already historic — at 23, the Melbourne-born point guard is in the company of Hall of Famers Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Oscar Robertson.
Jordan, Magic, Bird, Grant Hill and Jason Kidd each had 20 triple doubles in their first five season. All five are in the Hall of Fame.
Chicago Bulls star Giddey is also in a club all of his own. He is the youngest, second youngest, third youngest AND forth youngest player in NBA history to record a triple double.
Yes, you read that correctly.

Giddey already has more career triple doubles (23) than Kobe Bryant (21), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (21), Chris Webber (21) and Charles Barkley (20). All four are in the Hall of Fame.
There are three active players that have also delivered 20 triple doubles in their first five years in the league: Russell Westbrook, Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic — all three are first ballot Hall of Famers right now.
Giddey has delivered what first ballot Hall of Famers Draymond Green (33), LeBron James (122), Wilt Chamberlain (78) and James Harden (82) have not. All four didn't record 20 triple doubles before the age of 25.
Today there are only three players averaging more than 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the league. One of them is Giddey.
- Luka Dončić (LAL) – 35.0 PTS, 9.2 REB, 9.1 AST
- Nikola Jokić (DEN) – 29.2 PTS, 12.3 REB, 11.0 AST
- Josh Giddey (CHI) – 20.3 PTS, 9.5 REB, 8.9 AST
Sixteen of the top 30 players on the all-time triple list are already in the Hall of Fame. Seven more are locks for the Hall. Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers NBA champion Rajon Rondo is eligible in 2026 and is one the bubble, Denver Nugget Fat Lever is considered overlooked, Toronto Raptors NBA champion Kyle Lowery is still active and is highly likely. Sacramento Kings centre Domantas Sabonis is building a case to join his father Arvydas (Class of 2011) while Giddey's fellow Australian Ben Simmons, who has 33 career triple doubles, will not be in the Hall of Fame.
Substance abuse stopped Michael Ray Richardson from making the Hall. What it means is this: 26 of the 30 players in the top 30 triple doubles list are either in the Hall of Fame. Three won't make it. The other is Giddey.

Clearly it's way, way to early to speculate whether Giddey will be the first Australian men's basketballer in the NBA Hall of Fame. One his current trajectory, if he plays 1,000 regular season games, he'll deliver 76 triple doubles but that trajectory is based on rotation minutes at OKC Thunder before being traded to the Chicago Bulls before the start of the 2024-25 season.
He is now the primary point guard at the Bulls. He's averaging a career high 34.1 minutes per game and career highs in points, rebounds and assists.
Giddey's had five triple doubles in 21 games this season alone. It's almost unthinkable that Giddey could deliver a triple double every 4.2 games for another 700 (eight seasons). But and it's a big but, he would have 238 triple doubles by the age of 31.
Westbrook holds the record with 207.
Of course, at basketball.com.au, we dare to dream.
