South Australian women's basketballer Lara Somfai has been named the Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week by the US Basketball Writers Association.
The Adelaide forward, who plays for Stanford University, averaged 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in wins against UC Davis (70–45) and Lehigh (98–43), including her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds against UC Davis. She now sits tied for the ACC lead in double-doubles (3) and is one of five freshmen nationally with that many so far.
Somfai added another strong all-around performance against Lehigh, finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. She is one of only two major-conference freshmen to record that stat line in a game this season (the other being Mississippi State’s Madison Francis on November 9, 2025).
Through the opening month of play, Somfai is also one of just two Power Four freshmen averaging at least 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds, joining Arkansas forward Bonnie Deas. She ranks sixth nationally in defensive rebound percentage (32.7%), underscoring her early impact on the glass.
Stanford now turns its attention to the Resorts World Classic in Las Vegas following Thanksgiving, with matchups against FGCU on Saturday, November 29 (AEDT), and Colorado State on Sunday, November 30, 2025 (AEDT).
