NBL referees boss Scott Butler says whistleblowers need to strike a better balance to allow the league’s stars to shine, admitting they overofficiated the first 50-plus foul game of the season that played havoc with the broadcast schedule, writes Michael Randall from Code Sports.
Fans erupted on social media on Thursday night as the traditionally bruising battle between Tasmania and Melbourne United descended into a foul fest where the two teams combined for 56 fouls and shot 72 free throws as six players were disqualified — turning a 40-minute game into a 2hr9min marathon.
Commentators did their best not to fan the ref angst, Jack Heverin offering “next one who breathes gets a warning” after Joe Ingles was slapped with a delay-of-game warning for toddling past Will Magnay at the free throw line and tapping him on the tummy.
Finding the perfect balance between enforcement and entertainment is the “billion-dollar question”, Butler said.
“You don’t want a referee to referee with the rule book in front of their face — you want them to actually referee with the rule book in their back pocket,” he said.
“The stars are the stars of the game. We want the players to shine. We want the game to shine and we’ve got to make sure that, where we can, we sit in the back pocket and just call what’s appropriate for the game with a high degree of certainty.”
Game duration is a serious pain point for all departments across the NBL, with an optimal run time of between 1 hour 45 minutes and 1 hour 57 minutes to provide certainty for broadcasters.
Butler said running time was a real issue for officials, who are acutely aware of the need to stay within acceptable parameters to meet commitments to broadcasters.
