Tasmania have added to their guard depth, elevating a development player to a roster spot.

  • Guard Nick Stoddart has signed a one-year deal with the Tasmania JackJumpers
  • Stoddart spent last season as a development player, scoring a career-high 14 points against South East Melbourne
  • He is currently playing in the NBL1 South with the Ballarat Miners

The Tasmania JackJumpers have signed guard Nick Stoddart to a one-year deal, elevating the Brisbane product from a development player spot to be part of the 11-man playing roster.

Stoddart, 25, joined the JackJumpers as a development player for the 2024-25 season after helping the Ballarat Miners to the 2024 NBL1 South grand final, averaging 14.8 points, 3.0 assists and 2.6 rebounds.

The Brisbane Capitals junior earned valuable minutes for injury-riddled Tasmania this past NBL season, scoring nine points in 15 minutes against the Adelaide 36ers on January 10 and a career-high 14 points in 26 minutes, when he started against the South East Melbourne Phoenix in just under 27 minutes - proving he was ready for the NBL stage.

Stoddart currently averages 18.4 points, 2.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds for the Miners this NBL1 South season under Phoenix assistant coach Luke Brennan, while shooting 50% from the field and 34% from the three-point line. He scored 41 points in 24 minutes against Waverley earlier this season.

He has previously been a training player for the Brisbane Bullets after dominating the NBL1 North in 2021, averaging more than 20 points per game for the Capitals before injury disrupted his next two seasons, when he made the move to the NBL1 South.

Stoddart, a dynamic left-handed guard who can create his own shot off the dribble as well as knock down shots from the perimeter, adds to Tasmania's depth at his position, where they already have the likes of fellow Aussies Sean MacDonald and new signing Ben Ayre, who made the switch from South East Melbourne.

His performances and improvement have earned him a spot in coach Scott Roth's team with the JackJumpers mentor praising Stoddart after a loss to the Illawarra Hawks in January.

"Another judgment will come again when he has his NBL1 season to see what growth is there, but he's earned the right to maybe turn some heads which is always great and a compliment again to my coaching staff for the work they do with kids who come in here like that," Roth said.

"He has the ability in late clock to break someone down and get to the rim and score, and when he's aggressive and has a bit more of a nasty streak in him that will be probably his next area of growth."

Tasmania recently announced championship-winning import guard Jordon Crawford would not return next season and also signed American guard David Johnson to a one-year deal.
