Zara fashions 22 points of 'Excellence' in key Rd7 win
Rising star Zara Russell scored 22 points as the Centre of Excellence beat Hills in 2026 NBL1 East.

Zara Russell and Nicole Munger delivered standout performances as the Centre of Excellence and Newcastle Falcons strengthened their East Women finals credentials in Round 7.
Russell powered the Centre of Excellence past Hills in a high-tempo contest between finals contenders, while Munger anchored Newcastle’s inside dominance in a statement defensive win against Maitland.
Across the weekend, the league’s leading teams continued separating through defensive pressure, rebounding control and efficient half-court offence as the race behind unbeaten Norths and second-placed Manly tightened.

Centre of Excellence 87 def. Hills Hornets 76
Zara Russell controlled the game offensively as Centre of Excellence pulled away from Hills Hornets in the second half.
Russell finished with 22 points, four assists and three steals while repeatedly attacking downhill in transition and creating advantages off secondary actions.
Isabel Smith added 16 points on 77.8% shooting, while Aspen Crase contributed 11 points on 3-from-4 shooting.
The Centre of Excellence generated balanced offence throughout the game, placing six players in double figures while shooting 46.5% overall.
The CoE repeatedly punished Hills through pace and interior movement, finishing 24-from-40 on two-point attempts and consistently collapsing the defence before kicking to perimeter shooters.
Jemyma Manyok controlled the glass with 12 rebounds while Olivia Olechnowicz added four assists and helped stabilise the offence despite shooting struggles.
After trailing by three points at quarter-time, the CoE outscored Hills 45-39 across the second half through defensive pressure and transition scoring.
Hills still received a huge scoring burst from Piper Anderson, who produced 22 points on 63.6% shooting and knocked down four threes off the bench.
Jade Kirisome added 14 points, while Sherrie Calleia finished with 13 points and seven assists.
But Hills struggled protecting the ball against the CoE defensive pressure, committing 24 turnovers while shooting just 37.7% overall.

Newcastle Falcons 78 def. Maitland Mustangs 60
Nicole Munger and Meg Jefferson combined to control the paint as Newcastle Falcons strengthened their top-five position with a defensive statement against Maitland Mustangs.
Munger finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds and five assists while repeatedly creating efficient scoring opportunities around the basket.
Jefferson added 21 points on 57.1% shooting as Newcastle generated efficient offence through interior touches and half-court execution.
The Falcons shot 51.1% inside the arc and controlled the rebounding battle 41-38 while holding Maitland to just 38% shooting overall.
Newcastle’s defensive pressure consistently disrupted Maitland’s offensive rhythm, forcing contested perimeter attempts and limiting second-side ball movement.
Rose Bond added eight points and three assists, while Sophie Brennan knocked down three triples in an 11-point performance.
The Falcons also generated 12 steals and repeatedly converted turnovers into transition opportunities during the first half.
Maitland struggled generating efficient offence outside Shakera Reilly and Kasey Neubert.
Reilly scored 16 points with four made threes, while Neubert added 15 points and seven rebounds.
But Maitland managed just one free throw make for the game and shot 25% from three as Newcastle controlled the game defensively from the opening quarter.
