The Australian Sapphires have shown they are genuine gold medal contenders at the FIBA Under-17 Women's World Cup but now their attention has turned to taking their performances to another level for their final group stage clash.
Australia almost pulled off an upset to remember against the USA on Monday morning (AEST), falling to the tournament favourites 74-72.
Despite the loss, the result showed the Sapphires have what it takes to go all the way and head coach Tom Garlepp said they still have plenty of room to improve.
"We played together and gave ourselves opportunities within our system," he told basketball.com.au.
"I was happy with the fight and hope we can continue to grow in our commitment to that.
"I hope we stick together and keep taking steps forward in our mindset and belief.
"The match had positives and growth areas but our continued growth in trusting ourselves will be important as we approach knockout stages."
Australia, who are looking to build on the bronze medal won by the men's team at the recent FIBA U17 Men's World Cup, have had different players stand up throughout the first two games.
But they have been led by Victoria Metro star Madison Ryan as well as Queensland products Olivia Olechnowicz and Isabel Smith, who broke the individual steals record in game one before scoring 15 and 20 points respectively against the USA in game two.
Matilda Trout has also been a powerhouse for the Sapphires, Jade Sherrington has enjoyed a successful return from an ACL injury while Sophie Richardson has also been impressive for the green and gold.
The Sapphires face a danger game against Cote D'Ivoire in their final group stage game before advancing to the knockout stages.
'We want to breathe and realign (on our day off after the USA game) while taking steps to ensure we are ready for Cote D’Ivoire. A side who had a strong Africas tournament that will push us," Garlepp said.
Australia take on Cote D'Ivoire at 10.45pm (AEST).
