United’s bid to secure Dave Joerger has taken them to Europe with Chris Goulding making the trip

Melbourne United superstar Chris Goulding and club chief executive Nick Truelson have jetted off for Italy in a bid to entice former Memphis and Sacramento NBA head coach Dave Joerger to take on the club’s top job, writes Michael Randall and Matt Logue from CODE Sports.

Code Sports has learned Joerger, currently an assistant at Milwaukee Bucks, is part of the club’s coach search process and is in the tranquil city of Treviso to coach at the annual Adidas Eurocamp.

And United is pulling out all the stops, sending its biggest star and one of the league’s greatest players as part of the mission.

United has been searching for a new head coach since early May, when it parted ways with two-time championship mentor Dean Vickerman.

CODE Sports understands ex-United assistant Jacob Chance and former LA Laker Coby Karl, son of NBA coaching great George Karl, were among those Melbourne has canvassed for the job.

But it appears Joerger, 52, has emerged as the key target to lead the club’s new era under new majority owner Travis Knipe.

Joerger is undoubtedly one of the most-credentialed American coaches to have been linked to Australian basketball in recent years.

He spent three seasons as head coach of the Grizzlies as the architect of the club’s famous ‘grit and grind’ era. He then spent three more with the Kings, having built a reputation as one of basketball’s best developmental and defensive minds.
