Key Details

By the Numbers

  • Sania Feagin (Adelaide Lightning) starred with 19 points, 10 rebounds, one assist, one steal, and three blocks in 27 minutes.
  • Teige Morrell (UC Capitals) scored 15 points, had six rebounds, one assist, and one block in 26 minutes.

What Happened

Adelaide Lightning established control early, edging UC Capitals 22-21 in opening quarter but not before jumping out to an early lead only to be pegged back before the end of the shift. The second period remained back and forth with both teams scoring 19 points, leaving Adelaide with a slim one-point advantage at halftime. The home side found their rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Capitals 17-10 to build a commanding eight-point lead heading into the final period.

The Lightning's stellar defense proved decisive throughout the contest. Despite 18 lead changes, Adelaide dominated time in possession, controlling the lead for over 34 minutes compared to Capitals' brief four-minute advantage. The hosts stretched their advantage to as much as 13 points, while UC Capitals could never lead by more than two.

Steph Talbot delivered an outstanding all-around performance for Adelaide with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals in 37 minutes. Her perfect shooting from inside the arc (3-from-3) complemented Feagin's dominant interior presence. For UC Capitals, Jade Melbourne struggled offensively with just three points on 1-from-5 shooting but contributed significantly with nine assists, six rebounds, and four steals.

The difference came down to shooting efficiency, with Adelaide converting an impressive 58.97% from the field compared to Capitals' lacklustre 38.18%. The Lightning's interior dominance was evident with 23 made two-pointers against 21 for the visitors, despite attempting 16 fewer shots inside the arc. Adelaide also secured a significant advantage in blocks (6-1), with Feagin accounting for half of the team's rejections.

Despite winning the rebounding battle 40-37 and committing fewer turnovers (20-22), UC Capitals couldn't overcome their shooting woes. Adelaide's balanced attack featured four players in double figures – Feagin (19), Talbot (18), Sundell (14), and Loughridge (14) – while the Capitals relied heavily on Morrell (15) and Munger (14) for offensive production. Melbourne's uncharacteristic scoring drought (just three points) proved costly for the visitors.
