Australian citizen – Australian Boomer.
For more than a decade, “FIBA Patty” has owned the scoring point guard role for the national men’s team, but the six-time NBL MVP is now “Boomer Bryce”.
Bryce Cotton will play for the Boomers at the FIBA 2027 World Cup qualifiers at RAC Arena in Perth, the venue where the American-born superstar won the first of five MVPs before signing with the Adelaide 36ers before the start of NBL26.
“Representing the Australian men’s national basketball team for the first time is something I don’t take lightly. Coming from where I come from, this opportunity means a lot to me and my family,” Cotton said.
“Australia has embraced me from day one, and I’m grateful for the chance to wear the green and gold alongside a great group of guys. I’m excited, motivated, and ready to give everything I have for the country.”
The Boomers play Guam on July 3, 2026 and the Philippines on July 6.
Basketball Australia is today announcing that Bryce Cotton will make his Australian Boomers debut at the upcoming FIBA 2027 Basketball World Cup qualifiers at RAC Arena in Perth, Western Australia.
“We’re excited to see what Bryce looks like as part of the Boomers program,” EGM of High Performance Jason Smith said.
“We feel like he’s a great cultural fit, and obviously, he has a dynamic playmaking ability, which has been on display with his performances at the elite level over the last decade.
“We think he’ll suit the physicality of the international format, and the July window in Perth will give us a solid look at how he integrates to the FIBA game.”
Back in September 2025, when Cotton was going through the process of earning his Australian citizenship, the possibility of playing for the Boomers wasn’t on his radar.
" I haven’t thought about it," Cotton said on SEN SA at the time.
“I’m still honestly processing that this thing is actually official, ’cause I’m so used to hearing there’s a catch to it or it’s a delay.
"So I’ll cross that bridge once this finally sets in.
"(The ceremony) I believe (is) relatively soon. I think we’re just trying to set up a date for the ceremony, but yeah, I think that’s gonna be pretty soon."
But in an exclusive interview with Jason Cadee on Cut to the Jase in March, Cotton revealed he had spoken to Boomers head coach Adam Capon.
“I spoke to Caporn at the beginning of the season, right when I got citizenship,” Cotton told Jason Cadee on Cut to the Jase.
“I’d imagine that by the time the NBA season is done, we’ll probably touch base again.
“But yeah, I’ve spoken to him.”
“I’m human, and I’ve bounced around a lot of different emotions.
“I talked to some people back home, a couple of close friends, and as an American growing up, the Olympics were never really something I thought about.
“If you’re going to play in the Olympics as an American, not only do you have to make the NBA, you have to be in the top one per cent of players in the NBA as well. So it was never a thought.
“But to have an opportunity to play against the world’s best and see the world’s best in every sport, once I got citizenship, people kind of ingrained that in my mind over and over again.
“They talked me into the idea that if the opportunity does come up, maybe I should go after it, because that would probably be the one thing left missing on my résumé.
“It would just be a blessing that I never, ever expected. To become an Olympian would be insane.
“So I’m more open to it now than I had said in the last year or two.”
Between the Olympic Games in 2028, there’s a World Cup in 2027. The Boomers need a bona fide scorer to provide the same clutch shot-making as “FIBA Patty”. Whether Mills will be in Los Angeles is uncertain, but if Cotton is healthy no doubt he should be.
