Bryce Cotton scored 21 points as Australia crushed the Philippines 92-49 to stay unbeaten

Freshly-minted Australian Bryce Cotton caught fire in the opening quarter to lead the Boomers to a commanding 92-49 victory against the Philippines in their FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifier at RAC Arena on Monday, July 6, 2026.

The victory kept Australia unbeaten through the first phase of qualifying, improving to 6-0 and top of Group E with 12 points carried into the next stage.

Cotton, playing in front of his former home crowd in Perth, needed fewer than 20 minutes to finish with a game-high 21 points, knocking down five three-pointers and setting the tone with 13 first-quarter points.

After Kevin Quiambao levelled the scores at 8-8 midway through the opening term, Australia responded emphatically. Tasmania JackJumpers star Taran Armstrong's driving lay-up sparked a decisive 16-0 run as the Boomers raced to a 33-14 quarter-time advantage.

Cotton buried three triples during the burst, while Australia's defence forced repeated turnovers and denied the visitors any offensive rhythm.

Although Australia's offence cooled in the second quarter, the Boomers still carried a comfortable 41-27 lead into halftime before reasserting themselves after the break.

Tyrese Proctor added 16 points, four rebounds and four assists, attacking the rim and converting all four of his free throws while again playing a composed floor game.

Josh Bannan was outstanding off the bench, producing an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double while adding a steal and a block in an energetic all-round performance.

Mitch Creek finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Keanu Pinder provided another strong contribution with nine points, five rebounds, three steals and a block in just under 14 minutes.

Australia's defensive pressure overwhelmed the Philippines throughout the night.

The Boomers limited the visitors to just 28 per cent shooting from the field and 16.7 per cent from three-point range, while dominating the glass 53-31 and collecting 21 offensive rebounds.

Those extra possessions helped offset Australia's own difficult shooting night from beyond the arc, finishing 11-from-43 from three.

Despite the cold perimeter shooting, Australia still controlled the paint, converting 56.8 per cent of its two-point attempts while repeatedly creating second-chance opportunities through relentless offensive rebounding.

Mike Phillips battled hard for the Philippines with six points and a game-high 14 rebounds but received little offensive support as no Filipino player reached double figures.

Australia's depth again proved decisive.

All 12 Boomers scored for the second straight game, with David Okwera making the most of limited minutes by knocking down his only shot – a three-pointer.

Adam Caporn rotated his squad throughout the second half, but the intensity never dropped as Australia outscored the Philippines 51-22 after halftime to complete another emphatic victory.

The victory completed a perfect 6-0 first-round campaign for Australia, which finished on top of Group A ahead of New Zealand, the Philippines and Guam. Those results now carry into the second round, where the Boomers begin Group E atop the standings on 12 competition points ahead of Iran and Jordan (both 5-1), with New Zealand (4-2), the Philippines (2-4) and Syria (2-4).

Australia resumes its World Cup qualifying campaign against Syria on August 28 before hosting Jordan two days later.

Australia carries a commanding +162 points differential into the next stage after averaging 94.2 points per game while holding opponents to 67.2.
