Giddey sidelined at least two weeks as he builds All-Star case with historic triple-double pace

Australian point guard Josh Giddey is out for at least two weeks, the Chicago Bulls said.

Giddey, 23, is having an outstanding season after signing a USD $100M contract extension before the start of the 2025-26 season.

The Melbourne-born Australian Boomer is averaging 19.2 points per game, 8.9 rebounds and 9.0 assists in 30 games.

Giddey has produced seven triple-doubles this season, reinforcing his leap into All-Star contention as the offensive engine of the Chicago Bulls.

Bulls head coach Billy Donovan said it was next man up during the next two weeks with Giddey's backcourt partner Coby White also out.

"Obviously the injuries are significant in terms of the importance of the player,” he said.

“I’m disappointed, and I feel bad for guys when they can’t play, but this is an opportunity. Can we grow from this and learn from what happened last time, because we need to play better.

“Are the injuries impactful? Yes. But these guys are all pros, and they all want an opportunity to play, and we’ve got to be a whole lot better.

“Our guard play in particular needs to get better, and I know with Coby and Josh, whatever their status may be in the future, I think there’s enough there with Ayo, Kevin Huerter and Tre Jones to carry the load.

“It’s a result-oriented business, but I look at it through the lens of: can we play to an identity? Covering for each other on defense, helping each other on offense, moving the basketball, playing the right way, not turning it over.

“Now, are we good enough to overcome and go win games? Remains to be seen. But I know if we don’t do those things, we have no chance.

“If we have injuries, that’s just the price of admission to be in a competitive situation.

“It may not be enough. I don’t know. But I know we can play better than that.

“These are two backcourt players that handle the ball a lot for us.

“They’re great players — really good players — and I’m not diminishing their importance, Coby and Josh and Zach’s importance to our team. I’m not.

“What do we do now? Just go into the games and say, ‘We can’t win’? That’s disrespectful to the guys in that locker room.

This is a great opportunity. They’re all pros. They all want to play. Everybody gets a chance to step up for each other.”

NBA Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett declared Giddey is a lock for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game, in Los Angeles on February 16, 2026.

The Bulls are 15-17 heading into 2026 and Giddey is set to miss at least 10 games between now and January 17. He was on track to surpasses Michael Jordan's career triple double mark against the Boston Celtics on January 25, 2026.
